What is Ruta chalepensis used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Ayurvedic practice, Ruta chalepensis is used in preparations targeting muscular pain, digestive complaints, nervous tension, and as a topical antimicrobial. Question 2

Is Ruta chalepensis native to Sri Lanka?

No, Ruta chalepensis is not native to Sri Lanka. It originates in the Mediterranean region and parts of North Africa and the Middle East. It was introduced to Sri Lanka through centuries of trade and medicinal plant exchange, and has since been cultivated by local Ayurvedic practitioners.

Question 3

Is Ruta chalepensis safe to consume?

Accepted Answer

Ruta chalepensis contains potent alkaloids and furocoumarins that make it toxic in high doses. It should never be self-administered. Any therapeutic use must be guided by a qualified Ayurvedic physician who can advise on safe preparation, correct dosage, and contraindications. It is strictly contraindicated during pregnancy.

Question 4

What does Ruta chalepensis look like?

Accepted Answer

Ruta chalepensis is a low-growing, aromatic perennial shrub with deeply divided, blue-green leaves and small four-petalled yellow flowers. It produces a strong, distinctive scent from its volatile oils. The plant typically grows to around 50–80 cm in height when cultivated in sunny, well-drained conditions.

Question 5

Where is Ruta chalepensis cultivated in Sri Lanka?
