Question 1

What is Ran Avuda Mandapaya in Polonnaruwa?

Accepted Answer

Ran Avuda Mandapaya is a small ceremonial pavilion located in the Quadrangle (Dalada Maluwa) of ancient Polonnaruwa. It is notable for its uniquely carved stone columns featuring a twisted rope-like motif. The name translates roughly as the 'Golden Shoe Pavilion', referencing the ornate appearance of its pillars.

Question 2

How old is Ran Avuda Mandapaya?

Accepted Answer

The structure dates to the Polonnaruwa Kingdom period, which flourished primarily between the 11th and 13th centuries CE. It was built under royal patronage during a time when Polonnaruwa served as the capital of Sri Lanka and artistic craftsmanship reached a high point.

Question 3

Is Ran Avuda Mandapaya open to tourists?

Accepted Answer

Yes, it is accessible as part of the Polonnaruwa Archaeological Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A single entry ticket covers access to all the monuments within the ancient city, including the Quadrangle where Ran Avuda Mandapaya is located.

Question 4

How long does it take to explore the Polonnaruwa Quadrangle?

Accepted Answer

Most visitors spend between one and two hours exploring the Quadrangle, which contains around a dozen significant monuments in close proximity to one another. Allowing a full half-day for the broader ancient city is recommended if you also plan to visit the Gal Vihara and Royal Palace complex.

Question 5

Can I visit Polonnaruwa as a day trip from Kandy?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Polonnaruwa is approximately 130 km from Kandy and the drive typically takes around three hours. A day trip is feasible, though starting early is important given the heat and the amount to see. Many travellers combine Polonnaruwa with a stop at Dambulla Cave Temple on the same day.

Question 6

What makes the columns of Ran Avuda Mandapaya unusual?

Accepted Answer

The columns feature a twisted or rope-spiral carving along their shafts, a decorative technique that appears rarely in medieval Sri Lankan architecture. This sets Ran Avuda Mandapaya apart from other structures in the Quadrangle and suggests highly specialised artisans were involved in its construction.

Question 7

Do I need a guide to visit Ran Avuda Mandapaya?

Accepted Answer

A guide is not mandatory, but the pavilion's historical and architectural context is easy to miss without one. Licensed guides are available at the site museum near the entrance and can be hired for the full Quadrangle circuit. Signage at the site provides basic information in English and Sinhala.
