Mesha and Makara Porondam

This page explains how Sri Lankan marriage matching, porondam in the Sinhala tradition and porutham in the Tamil tradition, reads a pairing of Mesha (Aries) and Makara (Capricorn). The rashi-level results differ depending on which partner is in which sign, so both directions are covered. The real match, however, is decided by the two birth stars.

Which Mesha and Makara are we talking about?

In Sri Lankan matching, the rashi is your moon sign (chandra rashi): the sign the Moon occupied at your birth in the sidereal zodiac used in Sri Lanka. It is not the sun sign found in newspaper horoscopes, so someone who calls themselves Aries in a magazine may have a quite different moon sign.

Mesha is ruled by Mars and Makara by Saturn. The rashi-level checks look at three things: the count from the bride's sign to the groom's, whether the two ruling planets are friendly, and vashya, a traditional measure of mutual attraction between signs. Because the count is taken from the bride's sign, swapping the partners changes the result, which is why each direction is explained separately below.

What happens when the bride is Mesha and the groom is Makara?

Counting from Mesha to Makara gives 10. Both traditions treat this count favourably: the Sinhala rashi item and the Tamil rasi item are both obtained.

The rashi lords, Mars and Saturn, are not friends. Their relationship is mixed, with one treating the other as neutral and the other as hostile. The Sinhala rashyadhipathi item is therefore partly obtained, while the Tamil rasi adhipathi item is not obtained.

Vashya is not obtained in either tradition for this direction. Overall, the sign count is a clear strength here, while the planetary relationship and vashya do not add to the score. These are only the rashi-level items, though, and they sit alongside many star-based checks.

What happens when the bride is Makara and the groom is Mesha?

Counting from Makara to Mesha gives 4. The two traditions read this differently: the Sinhala rashi item is partly obtained, while the Tamil rasi item is not obtained.

The rashi lords are the same pair, Saturn and Mars, with the same mixed neutral-and-hostile relationship. The Sinhala rashyadhipathi item is again partly obtained and the Tamil rasi adhipathi item not obtained.

Vashya shows the clearest difference between the traditions. In the Sinhala reckoning vashya is obtained in this direction, but the Tamil vasya item is not obtained. This is a good reminder that porondam and porutham use their own rules, so a family following one tradition should read the results of that tradition rather than mixing the two.

Why do the birth stars decide the real match?

Each moon sign contains parts of several nakshatras, and a sign pair produces 81 possible star-quarter combinations. Most porondam and porutham items depend on the stars, so outcomes vary widely within the same sign pair.

With a Mesha bride and Makara groom, about 80% of combinations pass the Sinhala porondam (excluding the weekday item), about 28% fall into the lower band of the Tamil count, and about 4% show a Tamil rajju clash. With a Makara bride and Mesha groom, the figures are about 85%, 48% and 4%. In neither direction does any combination reach 8 of 10 porutham.
