Question 1

What is Lindernia anagallis used for in Sri Lankan Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

Lindernia anagallis is listed in Sri Lanka's official catalogue of ayurvedic medicinal plants, suggesting recognised traditional applications within the island's indigenous medical system. Across South Asian herbal traditions, related Lindernia species are associated with skin conditions and tonic properties. Specific clinical research on this particular species remains limited.

Question 2

Where does Lindernia anagallis grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant typically grows in damp, open habitats such as paddy-field margins, stream banks, and seasonally waterlogged ground. It is most common in the wet and intermediate zones at lower elevations. It is often found alongside traditional rice cultivation landscapes across the island.

Question 3

What family does Lindernia anagallis belong to?

Accepted Answer

Lindernia anagallis belongs to the family Linderniaceae, a group of small flowering herbs found across tropical and subtropical regions. It was previously classified under Scrophulariaceae before taxonomic revisions separated the Linderniaceae as a distinct family.

Question 4

How many medicinal plants are in Sri Lanka's ayurvedic catalogue?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka's Department of Ayurveda maintains one of the most comprehensive traditional plant catalogues in South Asia, covering hundreds of species from trees and shrubs to small herbs. Lindernia anagallis is formally catalogued under the reference LK94005778. The full catalogue includes plants from virtually every habitat type found on the island.

Question 5

Is Lindernia anagallis found only in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

No, the Lindernia genus is widespread across tropical Asia, Africa, and Australia. Lindernia anagallis specifically occurs in tropical and subtropical Asia more broadly, though it is formally catalogued and recognised within Sri Lanka's indigenous medical tradition. Its presence in Sri Lanka is documented particularly in lowland wet-zone habitats.

Question 6

What is the difference between Lindernia anagallis and other Lindernia species in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka hosts several Lindernia species, each distinguished by subtle differences in leaf shape, flower colour, and preferred habitat. Lindernia anagallis is identified by its small pale violet or whitish two-lipped flowers and preference for damp, open ground. Accurate identification typically requires botanical expertise, as species within the genus can appear superficially similar.

Question 7

Can I see medicinal plants like Lindernia anagallis on a tour of Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Medicinal and ethnobotanical plants can be encountered on herb garden visits, village walks, and agricultural landscape tours in the wet zone and hill country. Guided experiences that focus on Sri Lanka's traditional plant knowledge exist in several regions, particularly around the cultural heartland and the central highlands. These programmes provide valuable context for plants catalogued in the ayurvedic tradition.
