Question 1

What is Leucaena leucocephala used for in traditional medicine?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lankan Ayurvedic practice, various parts of the plant — seeds, leaves, bark, and roots — have been used in traditional remedies addressing parasitic infections, wound healing, inflammation, and skin conditions. These applications are specific to Ayurvedic formulations and should only be administered under the guidance of a qualified practitioner.

Question 2

Is Leucaena leucocephala native to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

No, the plant originates from Central America and Mexico but has naturalized extensively across tropical Asia, including Sri Lanka, where it grows in disturbed habitats, roadsides, and dry-zone scrublands. It is considered an invasive species in some parts of its introduced range.

Question 3

What does Leucaena leucocephala look like?

Accepted Answer

It is a fast-growing shrub or small tree with feathery bipinnate leaves, small white globe-like flower clusters, and long flat seed pods containing dark oval seeds. It can reach up to roughly ten metres in height under ideal conditions.

Question 4

Is Leucaena leucocephala dangerous or toxic?

Accepted Answer

The seeds contain an amino acid called mimosine, which can be toxic to non-ruminants and humans in large amounts without proper processing. Ayurvedic preparations typically process the plant to reduce this risk. The plant should not be self-administered without professional guidance.

Question 5

Where does Leucaena leucocephala grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

It is widespread across Sri Lanka's dry and intermediate zones, particularly in the north-central, northern, and eastern provinces. It commonly grows along roadsides, plantation edges, riverbanks, and degraded or disturbed land.

Question 6

What is the Sinhala name for Leucaena leucocephala?

Accepted Answer

The plant is commonly known as 'Ipil-ipil' in many parts of Asia. In Sri Lanka it may be referred to by local vernacular names that vary by region, and it is documented in the official Ayurvedic medicinal plant catalogue maintained by Sri Lanka's Ministry of Indigenous Medicine.

Question 7

Does Leucaena leucocephala have any environmental benefits?

Accepted Answer

Yes, it is a nitrogen-fixing plant, meaning it enriches depleted soils through its root nodules. It is used for soil stabilisation, as fuelwood, and as livestock fodder, particularly in dry-zone farming communities. However, its rapid spread can pose challenges in natural ecosystems.
