Question 1

Where exactly is Kadiraweli in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Kadiraweli is located on Sri Lanka's east coast in the Ampara District of the Eastern Province. It sits roughly 10 to 15 kilometres north of Pottuvil, the gateway town for Arugam Bay. The beach is accessed via coastal tracks from the main road.

Question 2

Is Kadiraweli safe for swimming?

Accepted Answer

During the dry season on the east coast, roughly May through September, the inshore waters at Kadiraweli are generally calm and suitable for swimming. Outside this window, the northeast monsoon can produce rougher conditions, and caution is advised. There are no lifeguards, so swimmers should assess conditions independently.

Question 3

How far is Kadiraweli from Arugam Bay?

Accepted Answer

Kadiraweli is approximately 15 to 20 kilometres north of Arugam Bay. The journey by road takes around 30 to 45 minutes depending on the condition of the track. A tuk-tuk or car is the most practical way to travel between the two.

Question 4

Are there sea turtles at Kadiraweli beach?

Accepted Answer

Sea turtles do occasionally come ashore at Kadiraweli to nest, as the beach's undisturbed character makes it suitable nesting habitat. Visitors should avoid using bright lights near the shoreline at night during nesting season and should never interfere with nests or hatchlings.

Question 5

What is the best time of year to visit the east coast of Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The east coast dry season runs from approximately May to September, when skies are generally clear and the sea is calm. This is the ideal period for beach visits, swimming, and surfing at nearby Arugam Bay. The northeast monsoon, active from around November to February, brings wetter conditions to the east coast.

Question 6

Can you visit Kadiraweli as a day trip from Arugam Bay?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Kadiraweli is easily visited as a half-day or full-day trip from Arugam Bay. A tuk-tuk or hired car can cover the distance in under an hour, making it a convenient escape for those wanting a quieter beach experience away from the Arugam Bay crowd.

Question 7

What wildlife can you see around Kadiraweli?

Accepted Answer

The lagoons and wetlands around Kadiraweli support a range of waterbirds including herons, painted storks, and migratory shorebirds. Saltwater crocodiles inhabit some of the nearby brackish lagoons, and sea turtles occasionally nest on the beach. The broader region also includes Kumana National Park, one of Sri Lanka's premier bird sanctuaries.

Question 8

Is there accommodation at Kadiraweli beach?

Accepted Answer

Accommodation options directly at Kadiraweli are very limited, typically small guesthouses or beach cabanas. Most travellers use Arugam Bay or Pottuvil as a base, both of which offer a wider range of places to stay. Booking ahead is strongly recommended during the May to August peak season.
