Question 1

Is Ayurveda in Sri Lanka the same as in India?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic tradition, known as Deshiya Chikitsa, shares the same classical roots as Indian Ayurveda but incorporates native plant species and localised treatment protocols that differ significantly from what you find in Kerala or Rishikesh. Practitioners train under a separate regulatory body, the Department of Ayurveda of Sri Lanka, and the overall approach tends to be gentler and more individually assessed.

Question 2

How do I choose a reputable Ayurveda resort in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Look for resorts where treatment is supervised by a resident BAMS-qualified physician who conducts an in-person consultation before prescribing any programme. The physician should be accessible throughout your stay, not just at the initial assessment. Membership of the Sri Lanka Ayurvedic Tourism Association or recognition by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority is a useful baseline indicator of standards.

Question 3

Can I combine sightseeing with a health tour in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and many guests do — but the balance needs careful planning. Most Ayurvedic programmes schedule morning and late-afternoon treatments, leaving midday free. Gentle cultural visits, short nature walks and slow scenic drives work well during these windows. Strenuous hikes or long days of activity are generally not recommended while on a Panchakarma programme, as they counteract the detoxification process.

Question 4

What should I eat during an Ayurvedic health tour?

Accepted Answer

Reputable resorts provide a full therapeutic meal plan aligned to your dosha assessment, so you do not need to make many independent dietary decisions during your stay. As a general guide, Ayurvedic dietary protocols emphasise warm, freshly cooked food, minimal raw salads, and avoidance of processed sugar, alcohol and red meat. Your resident physician will advise on any specific dietary restrictions relevant to your treatment.

Question 5

Is Sri Lanka suitable for a meditation retreat?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka has a living Theravada Buddhist tradition and several forest monasteries that accept lay meditators for extended silent retreats. These are distinct from commercial wellness resorts — they follow monastic schedules, require silence and observance of the five precepts, and are not suitable for casual visitors. For serious practitioners, they represent an opportunity to meditate within the same tradition from which many modern mindfulness practices derive.

Question 6

What is the minimum duration for a meaningful Ayurvedic programme?

Accepted Answer

Most Ayurvedic physicians recommend a minimum of seven days for a guest to experience meaningful therapeutic benefit. A full detoxification programme (Panchakarma) typically requires 14 to 21 days to complete properly. Shorter stays of three to five days can introduce Ayurvedic treatments and provide rest, but are not adequate for addressing specific health conditions.

Question 7

Do I need a visa for a health tour to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Most nationalities require an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) to enter Sri Lanka, which can be applied for online before departure. The standard tourist ETA is typically valid for 30 days and can be extended in-country if your health programme runs longer. Lakpura recommends checking the official Sri Lanka Immigration and Emigration website for current visa requirements relevant to your nationality.

Question 8

Are health tours in Sri Lanka suitable for older travellers?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic resorts are well suited to older travellers — the therapies are non-invasive, the pace is slow, and most resorts are single-storey properties set in gardens that do not require significant physical exertion to navigate. The physician consultation at the start of any programme takes existing health conditions and medications into account, and most resorts have on-call medical support for emergencies.
