It has historically been associated with treatments for inflammatory and skin conditions. Any therapeutic use should be guided by a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner.

Question 2

Where does Glochidion zeylanicum grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The species typically grows in lowland tropical forests, forest margins, and secondary scrubland across Sri Lanka's wet and intermediate zones. It is more commonly recorded in the south-western and central foothill regions, where forest cover remains relatively intact.

Question 3

Is Glochidion zeylanicum endemic to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The species is native to Sri Lanka but is not necessarily confined exclusively to the island — the Glochidion genus is distributed across tropical Asia. However, its species name 'zeylanicum' reflects its strong botanical association with Ceylon, the historical name for Sri Lanka.

Question 4

What family does Glochidion zeylanicum belong to?

Accepted Answer

Glochidion zeylanicum belongs to the family Phyllanthaceae. Plants in this family are often characterised by small, segmented fruits and inconspicuous flowers, and the family includes several species used in traditional medicine across South and Southeast Asia.

Question 5

Can I see medicinal plants like Glochidion zeylanicum on a tour in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Specialist botanical walks, Ayurvedic garden tours, and guided nature trails in reserves such as Sinharaja Forest Reserve and Makandawa Rainforest offer opportunities to encounter native medicinal plant species in their natural habitat. Several eco-lodges and Ayurvedic retreats also maintain dedicated medicinal plant gardens.

Question 6

How many medicinal plants are in Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic catalogue?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka's official Ayurvedic medicinal plant catalogue documents hundreds of species, representing a significant proportion of the island's native flora. The catalogue is maintained by government institutions dedicated to preserving and regulating traditional medicine, and Glochidion zeylanicum is among the documented entries.

Question 7

Is Glochidion zeylanicum endangered or threatened?

Accepted Answer

The species is not currently classified as critically threatened, though it faces the same habitat pressures as many native forest plants in Sri Lanka. Deforestation and agricultural expansion remain the primary concerns for its long-term conservation.
