Question 1

Is the Crested Serpent Eagle found only in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The broader species Spilornis cheela ranges across South and Southeast Asia. However, the subspecies found in Sri Lanka — Spilornis cheela spilogaster — is endemic to the island and is not found anywhere else in the world, which makes it of particular interest to birders visiting Sri Lanka.

Question 2

What does the Crested Serpent Eagle sound like?

Accepted Answer

Its call is a loud, clear, two- or three-note whistle often described as a sharp kweee-kweee or kwik-kwik-kweeee. The call carries well through dense forest and is frequently the first indication of the bird's presence, before it is seen.

Question 3

Where is the best place to see a Crested Serpent Eagle in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Sinharaja Forest Reserve is widely regarded as the most reliable site, especially along the main trail where mixed-species bird flocks regularly include this eagle. Kitulgala, Yala National Park, and the Knuckles Range are also excellent locations.

Question 4

Is the Crested Serpent Eagle dangerous to humans?

Accepted Answer

No. Like most raptors, it is shy around humans and will typically fly away when approached. It poses no threat to people and will not attack unless cornered or handled, which should never happen in any case as it is a protected species.

Question 5

How large is the Crested Serpent Eagle compared to other Sri Lankan eagles?

Accepted Answer

It is a medium-to-large raptor, considerably smaller than the Changeable Hawk-Eagle or the rare Grey-headed Fish Eagle, but noticeably larger than the common Shikra. Its wingspan typically reaches around 100–130 cm, making it a striking bird in flight.

Question 6

Can I see the Crested Serpent Eagle in Sri Lanka's hill country?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The species occurs from sea level up through the central highlands. The Knuckles Mountain Range and forested areas around Kandy and Ella provide good habitat, and the bird is regularly recorded at elevations above 1,000 metres.

Question 7

Does the Crested Serpent Eagle really eat venomous snakes?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Cobras, vipers, and other venomous species form part of its diet. The eagle's thick, scale-covered feet and fast strike technique reduce the risk of envenomation. It is not immune to snake venom but relies on speed and grip strength to overpower prey before a bite can land.
