Question 1

What is Chukrasia tabularis used for in ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lankan and South Asian ayurvedic practice, Chukrasia tabularis is primarily used for the medicinal properties of its bark. Traditional uses include preparations for fever reduction, skin conditions, wound care, and inflammatory complaints. It should only be used under the guidance of a qualified ayurvedic practitioner.

Question 2

What family does Chukrasia tabularis belong to?

Accepted Answer

Chukrasia tabularis belongs to the family Meliaceae, which also includes mahogany and neem. Members of this family are widespread in tropical Asia and many produce medicinally or commercially significant compounds called limonoids.

Question 3

What are the common names for Chukrasia tabularis?

Accepted Answer

The tree is commonly known as Chickrassy, Indian Mahogany, or White Chuglam in timber trade contexts. Regional names vary across South and Southeast Asia. In Sri Lanka it is documented in both Sinhala and Tamil ethnobotanical records.

Question 4

Where does Chukrasia tabularis grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

It grows in lowland and mid-elevation forests across Sri Lanka's wet and intermediate zones, typically below around 900 metres. The species favours well-drained soils and is found in mixed rainforest remnants and riverine forest edges, as well as managed timber plantations.

Question 5

Is Chukrasia tabularis timber used commercially?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the wood is reddish-brown, moderately hard, and valued for furniture, cabinetry, and joinery. In Sri Lanka, harvesting of native timber species from natural forest is regulated under national forestry law, so commercial trade typically comes from plantations.

Question 6

What research has been done on Chukrasia tabularis?

Accepted Answer

Phytochemical studies have identified limonoid compounds in the bark and seeds with potential antimicrobial, insecticidal, and antitumour properties in laboratory settings. Human clinical trials remain limited, so the plant's traditional uses have not yet been fully validated by modern pharmacological standards.

Question 7

Is Chukrasia tabularis an endangered species in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The species is not currently listed among the most critically threatened plants in Sri Lanka, but continued deforestation in the wet zone puts pressure on native forest trees generally. Conservation of lowland rainforest habitat is considered the most important protective measure for wild populations.
