Question 2

Is Celosia argentea native to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Celosia argentea is native to tropical Africa and Asia and has naturalised widely across South and Southeast Asia, including Sri Lanka. It grows readily across the island's lowlands and mid-elevation zones, colonising disturbed ground, roadsides, and garden borders. It is not a forest-dependent species and adapts well to cultivated environments.

Question 3

What are the different varieties of Celosia argentea?

Accepted Answer

Two forms are most commonly encountered: var. argentea, which has a feathery, elongated silver-pink plume, and var. cristata (cockscomb), which has a flattened, ruffled flower head resembling a rooster's comb. Both forms are grown ornamentally and have similar traditional medicinal applications.

Question 4

Can Celosia argentea leaves be eaten?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the young leaves of Celosia argentea are edible and are consumed as a leafy vegetable in parts of Africa, South Asia, and Southeast Asia. They are mildly astringent and are typically boiled or sautéed. Culinary use is distinct from medicinal use, and ordinary consumption as food is generally considered safe.

Question 5

What bioactive compounds does Celosia argentea contain?

Accepted Answer

Research has identified betacyanins, flavonoids, saponins, and tannins in various parts of the plant. These compounds are associated with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial activity in laboratory studies. Clinical research in humans is still limited, and the full pharmacological profile is an active area of study.

Question 6

Where can I see Celosia argentea in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant can be found growing in home gardens, roadsides, and cultivated herb gardens throughout much of Sri Lanka. The Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya near Kandy and various Ayurvedic herbal gardens across the island maintain labelled collections that include medicinal plants like Celosia argentea. Village herb walks in rural areas can also be a rewarding way to encounter it.

Question 7

Is Celosia argentea the same as cockscomb?

Accepted Answer

Cockscomb is a popular common name for Celosia argentea var. cristata, the crested variety with a fused, ruffled flower head. The feathery-plumed variety (var. argentea) is sometimes called silver cock's comb or plumed celosia. Both are the same species and share similar medicinal properties in traditional practice.
