Question 1

What is Cayratia pedata used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lanka's traditional Ayurvedic system, Cayratia pedata — particularly its roots and leaves — is used in formulations associated with inflammatory conditions, skin complaints, and joint disorders. It typically appears as one ingredient in compound preparations rather than as a standalone remedy. Scientific investigation into its bioactive compounds is ongoing but clinical evidence remains limited.

Question 2

Which family does Cayratia pedata belong to?

Accepted Answer

Cayratia pedata belongs to the Vitaceae family, the same plant family as the common grape vine. It is a tendril-bearing climbing plant whose palmately compound leaves give rise to the species epithet 'pedata', meaning foot-like in arrangement.

Question 3

Where is Cayratia pedata found in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant grows in the wet and intermediate zones of Sri Lanka, typically along forest margins, in secondary scrub, and on disturbed ground with sufficient moisture. It is gathered from wild stands rather than cultivated commercially and is associated with the lowland tropical vegetation of the island's wetter regions.

Question 4

Is Cayratia pedata endemic to Sri Lanka?

No, Cayratia pedata is not endemic to Sri Lanka. It has a broad distribution across tropical Asia, including India, Myanmar, Thailand, Bangladesh, and southern China, where it is also used in various indigenous medical traditions.

Question 5

What parts of Cayratia pedata are used medicinally?

Accepted Answer

Traditional practitioners most commonly use the roots, which are considered the most pharmacologically active part of the plant. The leaves are also used, often applied topically in poultices or incorporated into oral preparations. Stem bark occasionally appears in compound herbal remedies.

Question 6

What does the name Cayratia pedata mean?

Accepted Answer

The genus name Cayratia derives from a vernacular name used in the plant's native range. The species epithet 'pedata' is Latin for 'foot-like', referring to the palmate arrangement of the leaflets, which spread out from a common point in a pattern resembling the toes of a foot.

Accepted Answer

Cayratia pedata is catalogued in Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic medicinal plant records under the reference code LK94005661. It forms part of the broader official documentation of the island's native flora with recognised traditional therapeutic applications.
