Question 1

What is Allophylus zeylanicus used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

Allophylus zeylanicus is catalogued as a medicinal plant within Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic tradition. Plants in the Allophylus genus are generally associated with anti-inflammatory and antipyretic properties. In practice, the bark, leaves, or roots may be incorporated into compound formulations prepared by traditional physicians rather than used as a standalone remedy.

Question 2

Is Allophylus zeylanicus endemic to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The species is closely associated with Sri Lanka — the epithet 'zeylanicus' refers to Ceylon, the island's former name. While the broader genus Allophylus occurs across tropical Asia and Africa, this particular species is specifically documented in Sri Lankan flora and medicine. Its exact distribution and degree of endemism are subjects of ongoing botanical study.

Question 3

Where does Allophylus zeylanicus grow?

Accepted Answer

The plant is typically found in lowland and mid-elevation forests in Sri Lanka's wet and intermediate climatic zones. It favours humid conditions along forest margins, riverine habitats, and areas of secondary growth. It is also cultivated in some traditional home gardens maintained for medicinal purposes.

Question 4

What family does Allophylus zeylanicus belong to?

Accepted Answer

Allophylus zeylanicus belongs to the family Sapindaceae, commonly known as the soapberry family. This family includes a wide range of tropical trees and shrubs, many of which have documented uses in traditional medicine systems across Asia, Africa, and the Americas.

Question 5

How many medicinal plants does Sri Lanka have?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka is home to over 3,000 flowering plant species, a significant proportion of which are used in Ayurvedic and traditional medicine. The island's varied climate zones — wet, intermediate, and dry — support this remarkable plant diversity. Many species, including Allophylus zeylanicus, are part of a formally documented Ayurvedic plant catalogue maintained by national research institutions.

Question 6

Can I see medicinal plants used in Sri Lankan Ayurveda during a visit?

Accepted Answer

Yes — Ayurvedic resorts, spice gardens, and community forest tours offer opportunities to see and learn about native medicinal plants in their natural or cultivated settings. Some guided experiences in rainforest areas include ethnobotanical components led by local specialists. Wellness centres in hill-country and coastal regions often maintain demonstration herb gardens.

Question 7

Are Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic medicinal plants at risk?

Accepted Answer

Deforestation, agricultural expansion, and the erosion of traditional knowledge are recognised threats to Sri Lanka's medicinal plant heritage. Plants that depend on specific forest habitats are particularly vulnerable to habitat loss. Research institutions and university faculties of indigenous medicine are actively working to document, conserve, and propagate threatened species.
