Question 1

What is Adiantum capillus-veneris used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Ayurvedic medicine, Adiantum capillus-veneris is traditionally used to address respiratory ailments such as coughs and bronchitis, support hair and scalp health, reduce fever, and assist with minor urinary complaints. It appears in classical Sri Lankan and Indian herbal formulations, typically as a decoction, powder, or infused oil. Therapeutic use should always be guided by a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner.

Question 2

Where does the maidenhair fern grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Adiantum capillus-veneris grows in shaded, humid environments including rocky outcrops near waterfalls, stream banks, and the edges of wet-zone forest reserves. It is most commonly found in Sri Lanka's central highlands and wet zone, where consistent moisture and canopy cover provide suitable conditions. It can also appear on moist walls and in cultivated herb gardens across the island.

Question 3

Is Adiantum capillus-veneris the same as a maidenhair fern?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Adiantum capillus-veneris is the scientific name for the southern maidenhair fern, also called the Venus-hair fern. It belongs to the genus Adiantum within the family Pteridaceae and is one of the most widely distributed maidenhair fern species in the world, found across tropical, subtropical, and temperate regions.

Question 4

What compounds are found in Adiantum capillus-veneris?

Accepted Answer

Phytochemical studies have identified flavonoids, terpenoids, phenolic acids, and tannins in Adiantum capillus-veneris. These compounds are associated with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antifungal activity in laboratory settings. Large-scale clinical trials in humans are still limited, so the plant remains primarily within the domain of traditional medicine rather than modern pharmacology.

Question 5

How is Adiantum capillus-veneris prepared for medicinal use?

Accepted Answer

The most common preparations include water-based decoctions (kashaya) from fresh or dried fronds, powders (churna) blended with other herbs, oil infusions for topical use, and fresh-plant pastes applied to the skin. The appropriate preparation depends on the condition being treated and is determined by an Ayurvedic practitioner rather than through standardised pharmaceutical dosing.

Question 6

Is the maidenhair fern protected or endangered in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Adiantum capillus-veneris is widely distributed globally and is not currently classified as threatened or endangered. However, moisture-dependent species like this fern are sensitive to habitat loss from deforestation and changes in water courses. Sri Lanka's wet-zone forest reserves and highland protected areas play an important role in maintaining the humid ecosystems these plants depend on.

Question 7

Can I learn about Sri Lanka's medicinal plants as a visitor?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Ayurvedic herb gardens, spice estates, and wellness centres — particularly in the Kandy region and central highlands — offer guided introductions to Sri Lanka's medicinal plant heritage. Botanical walks in protected areas and highland forests provide an opportunity to see moisture-loving species like maidenhair ferns in their natural habitat, often with knowledgeable local guides.
