In Sri Lankan and South Asian ayurvedic traditions, Adenosma indianum has been used primarily for its aromatic and carminative properties, particularly to support digestive health. It has also been employed in preparations to manage mild fevers and, in some communities, applied externally for minor skin complaints. Its uses vary by region and practitioner.

Question 2

Where does Adenosma indianum grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant grows naturally in moist, open habitats across Sri Lanka's wet and intermediate zones. It is commonly found at the margins of paddy fields, along roadsides, in marshy grasslands, and on the edges of reservoir catchment areas at low to mid elevations. It is not typically cultivated.

Question 3

Is Adenosma indianum endemic to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

No, Adenosma indianum is not endemic to Sri Lanka. It is distributed across tropical South and Southeast Asia, including India and parts of mainland Southeast Asia. However, it is documented as part of Sri Lanka's national catalog of ayurvedic medicinal plant species.

Question 4

What family does Adenosma indianum belong to?

Accepted Answer

Adenosma indianum is currently classified in the family Orobanchaceae, though it was formerly placed in the Scrophulariaceae family in older botanical literature. It is a small annual herb with violet-blue tubular flowers and a faint aromatic scent.

Question 5

Are there scientific studies on Adenosma indianum?

Accepted Answer

Preliminary scientific research has identified bioactive compounds in Adenosma indianum, including volatile essential oils, flavonoids, and phenolic acids. Some laboratory studies have reported antimicrobial and antioxidant activity. However, human clinical trials remain limited, and its therapeutic applications in modern medicine are not yet formally validated.

Question 6

Can tourists encounter Adenosma indianum while visiting Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Travellers exploring Sri Lanka's rural lowlands, particularly paddy-farming areas and wetland edges in the wet zone, may encounter Adenosma indianum growing wild. It is a modest, unobtrusive herb that does not stand out like larger medicinal trees, but guided botanical walks in areas like the wet zone lowlands can help visitors identify it.

Question 7

How is Adenosma indianum prepared as a traditional medicine?

Accepted Answer

Traditional preparations typically use the aerial parts of the plant — leaves, stems, and flowers — either fresh or dried. These may be made into decoctions, infusions, or poultices depending on the intended use. Preparation methods should always be directed by a qualified ayurvedic physician rather than attempted without guidance.
