Question 1

What is Abarema bigemina used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

Abarema bigemina is listed in Sri Lanka's official catalogue of Ayurvedic medicinal plants. In traditional practice, parts of the tree such as the bark are associated with astringent and anti-inflammatory properties. It is typically used as a component in compound formulations rather than as a stand-alone treatment, and its application should always be guided by a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner.

Question 2

Where does Abarema bigemina grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The species grows in tropical lowland and mid-elevation forests across Sri Lanka's wet and intermediate climatic zones, generally below around 1,000 metres in elevation. It favours areas with consistent rainfall and well-drained soils, which are common in the island's southwestern and central regions.

Question 3

What family does Abarema bigemina belong to?

Accepted Answer

Abarema bigemina belongs to the family Fabaceae, specifically the subfamily Mimosoideae. This places it in the same broad botanical grouping as many other tropical trees with bipinnate leaves and clustered flowers, several of which are also documented in Ayurvedic pharmacopoeias across South and Southeast Asia.

Question 4

Is Abarema bigemina found in Sinharaja or other Sri Lankan forests?

Accepted Answer

While Abarema bigemina is documented from Sri Lanka's lowland and intermediate forests, its specific distribution within individual protected areas such as Sinharaja is not always comprehensively published in accessible literature. Sinharaja Forest Reserve, as one of the island's largest remaining lowland rainforests, hosts many of the botanical species catalogued in Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic plant lists.

Question 5

How does Sri Lanka document its Ayurvedic medicinal plants?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka's Department of Ayurveda, under the Ministry of Health, maintains an official catalogue of Ayurvedic medicinal plants used in traditional healthcare. Each species is assigned a reference code — Abarema bigemina carries the code LK94005677. This catalogue supports both clinical practice and ongoing phytochemical research.

Question 6

Are there Ayurvedic gardens or tours where I can learn about plants like Abarema bigemina?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Sri Lanka's Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya, near Kandy, maintains labelled collections of native and medicinal plants. Spice and herbal gardens in the hill country also offer guided introductions to Ayurvedic flora. Ayurvedic wellness centres across the island provide consultations that often include explanations of the plant ingredients used in treatments.

Question 7

What does the name Abarema bigemina mean?

Accepted Answer

The genus name Abarema is derived from a vernacular South American term applied historically to related trees in the Mimosoideae subfamily. The species epithet bigemina comes from Latin, meaning 'twice-paired,' referring to the plant's characteristic bipinnate leaves in which leaflets are arranged in two symmetrical pairs.
