Tucked within acres of tropical foliage on Sri Lanka's south-western coast, Reef is a beach villa that combines seclusion with understated elegance. Palm-fringed pavilions, reflection pools and lily ponds set the tone for a property that feels far removed from the ordinary, yet sits just 36 kilometres south of Colombo — a drive of roughly 40 minutes to one hour. Guests arriving from Bandaranaike International Airport can expect approximately one and a half hours on the road, while the Wadduwa railway station is a mere five minutes away for those travelling by train from Colombo Fort.

The villa's design is rooted in Indo-colonial splendour, and that aesthetic runs through every corner of the property — from the grand main house to the verandas that spill out toward a vast sandy beachfront.

Accommodation

Reef offers seven spacious suites, each named after a famous water flower of Sri Lanka: Olu, Manel, Nelum, Namal, Sepalika, Sapumal and Kekatiya. Nelum is the largest of the seven. High ceilings lined with Kerala terra cotta tiles, unique antique four-poster canopied beds and electric ceiling fans all contribute to a sense of colonial grandeur, while hand-crafted coloured floor tiles, soft cotton sheets and lightweight cotton dressing gowns keep the atmosphere warmly domestic. Original antiques are paired with beautifully crafted furniture throughout.

The bathrooms are a particular highlight, featuring free-standing hand-carved granite bathtubs, twin carved granite vanity basins and a rain shower behind a polished granite screen. A Venetian-style mirror and a curated selection of beauty products complete the picture. Each suite also opens onto various shaded and spacious verandas, where a private dinner can be arranged.

Dining

Reef operates two state-of-the-art kitchens, staffed by accomplished chefs. Menus draw on the best of both Sri Lankan and international cuisine, accompanied by fine wines. Guests may choose to dine beside the pool beneath a thatched roof, al fresco under the stars, at a private veranda, or in the main house — the setting is always a matter of personal preference.

The Reefresh Spa

The Reefresh Spa is designed for total privacy and revitalisation. Spa packages are accompanied by either a bottle of champagne or fresh king coconut water. The menu encompasses a wide range of massages, secluded outdoor baths, detoxifying clay cocoons, herbal salt scrubs and body scrubs. A dedicated wedding package offers spa pampering on the eve of a wedding, and the villa's honeymoon list allows friends and family to contribute towards making the occasion more special.
