Tucked away on the other side of the road and a little further up from the main stretch, Freedom Lodge is a modest family-run guest house in Kandy owned by Tamil Catholics. It offers three spotless, bright rooms, each fitted with hot water — a thoughtful comfort that sets it apart from many properties in its price range.

The atmosphere here is one of genuine hospitality. The hosts are known to be very welcoming, and the owner has been known to collect arriving guests directly from the station. A simple but hearty breakfast can be arranged for a small additional charge, making the start of a day in Kandy all the more easy.

Rooms and Facilities

All three rooms are en-suite and come equipped with mosquito nets, clean sheets, and fans — the essentials for a comfortable stay in the hill country. The double room upstairs carries a balcony and, as a result, commands a slightly higher price than the other rooms. While Freedom Lodge does not aim for luxury, cleanliness and comfort are clearly priorities throughout.

Location

The guest house sits within easy walking distance of Kandy's most visited landmarks. The lake can be reached on foot in around five minutes, and the main temple area is roughly another ten minutes beyond that. A small garden adds a pleasant touch of greenery to the property.

Freedom Lodge is best suited to travellers who value warm, personal service and a clean, honest stay over elaborate amenities. The combination of welcoming hosts, a convenient location, and well-kept rooms makes it a practical and characterful base for exploring Kandy.
