Question 1

What is Portulaca quadrifida used for in ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In traditional ayurvedic and folk medicine across South Asia, Portulaca quadrifida is used primarily for its reported cooling, diuretic, and skin-soothing properties. Preparations include topical poultices made from the crushed fresh plant and internally consumed leaf juice as part of compound formulations. Its use is typically guided by a qualified ayurvedic practitioner.

Question 2

Is Portulaca quadrifida found in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Portulaca quadrifida grows widely across Sri Lanka's dry and intermediate lowland zones. It favours open, sunny environments with sandy or gravelly soils — roadsides, field margins, and disturbed ground are all common habitats. It is not threatened and is considered a resilient, widespread herb.

Question 3

What does Portulaca quadrifida look like?

Accepted Answer

It is a small, mat-forming succulent herb with slender reddish stems, small fleshy oval leaves arranged in opposite pairs, and tiny four-petalled yellow flowers that open in the morning and close by midday. The species epithet 'quadrifida' refers to this four-divided flower structure.

Question 4

Is Portulaca quadrifida the same as common purslane?

Accepted Answer

No, though they are closely related. Common purslane is Portulaca oleracea, which is more widely cultivated and eaten as a vegetable globally. Portulaca quadrifida is a distinct species, generally smaller and more slender, whose primary role in Sri Lanka is medicinal rather than culinary.

Question 5

Can I eat Portulaca quadrifida?

Accepted Answer

Some ethnobotanical sources note that the plant has been consumed as a pot herb in parts of its range, similar to its relative common purslane. However, it is not a standard food plant in Sri Lanka and should not be consumed without expert guidance, particularly given its use in medicinal rather than culinary contexts locally.

Question 6

Which family does Portulaca quadrifida belong to?

Accepted Answer

Portulaca quadrifida belongs to the family Portulacaceae, within the order Caryophyllales. It was formally described by the botanist Linnaeus, as indicated by the 'L.' following its scientific name.

Question 7

Where can I learn more about Sri Lanka's ayurvedic medicinal plants?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka's Department of Ayurveda maintains a national pharmacopoeia and associated resources documenting the country's medicinal plant heritage. University faculties of ayurvedic medicine — particularly at the Gampaha Wickramarachchi University of Indigenous Medicine — conduct ongoing research into the island's botanical tradition.
