Question 1

What is Ocimum gratissimum called in Sinhala?

Accepted Answer

Ocimum gratissimum is sometimes referred to in Sinhala as Dummala Maduruthala, though local naming can vary by region. It is broadly grouped with other aromatic basils in folk usage. The plant is officially listed in Sri Lanka's ayurvedic pharmacopoeial references under the Ocimum genus.

Question 2

What are the traditional medicinal uses of Ocimum gratissimum?

Accepted Answer

Traditional ayurvedic practitioners in Sri Lanka use leaf decoctions of Ocimum gratissimum to treat coughs, fevers, and mild respiratory infections. It is also used for digestive complaints such as flatulence and bloating, and crushed leaves are applied externally to minor skin infections. Its antifungal properties in particular have been documented in laboratory studies.

Question 3

What does Ocimum gratissimum smell like?

Accepted Answer

The plant has a strong, spicy, and distinctly pungent aroma, quite different from the milder scent of sweet basil. Depending on the chemotype, the dominant note can be clove-like (from eugenol) or thyme-like (from thymol). Bruising a leaf releases the scent immediately and strongly.

Question 4

Is Ocimum gratissimum the same as holy basil or tulsi?

Accepted Answer

No, they are related but distinct species. Holy basil is Ocimum tenuiflorum, which is smaller and more commonly found in religious contexts across South Asia. Ocimum gratissimum is larger and woodier, with a higher eugenol or thymol content and a stronger focus on antimicrobial applications in traditional medicine.

Question 5

Can Ocimum gratissimum be found growing wild in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

It grows readily in Sri Lanka's lowland warm zones, particularly in home gardens, temple grounds, and at the edges of cultivated land in the dry and intermediate zones. It is not typically found in dense forest understorey but thrives in open sunny positions with well-drained soil.

Question 6

Is it safe to drink Ocimum gratissimum tea?

Accepted Answer

A mild leaf tea or decoction prepared in household quantities is generally considered safe for most adults. Pregnant women and people with liver conditions or those on anticoagulant medication should consult a qualified ayurvedic or medical practitioner before using the herb therapeutically. The concentrated essential oil is much more potent and should not be ingested without professional guidance.

Question 7

Is Ocimum gratissimum used in any formal ayurvedic medicines in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Sri Lanka's Department of Ayurveda recognises Ocimum gratissimum in its official pharmacopoeial references, and licensed ayurvedic pharmaceutical manufacturers on the island incorporate it into regulated herbal preparations. It features more often in simpler polyherbal remedies than in the major classical compound formulations.
