Question 1

Where is Nailiya Railway Station?

Accepted Answer

Nailiya Railway Station is located in the Kurunegala District, North Western Province, Sri Lanka. It lies on the Northern Line, 91.7 km from Colombo Fort, between Potuhera station to the south and Kurunegala station to the north.

Question 2

How many trains stop at Nailiya station per day?

Accepted Answer

Around 14 trains call at Nailiya on a typical day. The mix includes both northbound and southbound services, though not all trains running on the Northern Line stop here — intercity expresses in particular may pass through without halting.

Question 3

How long does it take to get from Colombo to Nailiya by train?

Accepted Answer

On a stopping train the journey typically takes around two to two-and-a-half hours, covering the 91.7 km distance with several intermediate halts. Journey times can vary depending on the service type and any operational delays.

Question 4

Can I buy a ticket at Nailiya Railway Station?

Accepted Answer

Nailiya is a small rural halt and ticketing facilities may be limited compared with larger stations. Walk-up third-class tickets are generally available for shorter journeys, but passengers planning longer trips — especially toward Anuradhapura, Vavuniya, or Jaffna — should purchase reserved tickets in advance at Colombo Fort or through Sri Lanka Railways.

Question 5

What is near Nailiya station worth visiting?

Accepted Answer

The surrounding Kurunegala District offers the historic Kurunegala Rock, Ethugalpoththa reservoir, and easy road access toward the Cultural Triangle sites of Anuradhapura and Dambulla. Kurunegala town, the next station north, has accommodation and local restaurants if you need to break your journey.

Question 6

Which stations are adjacent to Nailiya on the Northern Line?

Accepted Answer

The station immediately south of Nailiya (toward Colombo) is Potuhera, and the next station to the north is Kurunegala. Kurunegala is a significant junction and commercial hub in the North Western Province.

Question 7

Is the Northern Line scenic between Colombo and Kurunegala?

Accepted Answer

The stretch between Colombo and Kurunegala passes through flat agricultural plains, paddy fields, and coconut estates characteristic of Sri Lanka's North Western Province. While it is less dramatic than the hill-country routes, it offers a genuine and unhurried view of provincial life that many travellers find appealing.
