Question 1

Who was King Rajasinghe I of Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

King Rajasinghe I was the ruler of the Sitawaka kingdom in southwestern Sri Lanka from around 1581 to 1593. He was the son of King Mayadunne and is remembered for leading sustained military campaigns against Portuguese colonial forces. His reign was marked by both military achievement and considerable internal conflict.

Question 2

What was the Sitawaka kingdom and where was it located?

Accepted Answer

Sitawaka was a successor state to the fragmented Kotte kingdom, centred in what is today the Avissawella area of the Western Province. Under Mayadunne and later Rajasinghe I, it became the most powerful Sinhalese kingdom of the 16th century, controlling much of the island's interior at its peak.

Question 3

Did Rajasinghe I succeed in defeating the Portuguese?

Accepted Answer

Rajasinghe I never fully expelled the Portuguese from Sri Lanka, but he inflicted significant losses and prevented them from extending control into the interior. He besieged Colombo on multiple occasions and kept Portuguese power confined largely to coastal fortresses. After his death, Sitawaka's resistance collapsed and Portuguese influence expanded.

Question 4

Why did King Rajasinghe I convert from Buddhism to Hinduism?

Accepted Answer

The exact motivations are debated by historians. His conversion to Shaivite Hinduism later in his reign likely reflects the influence of South Indian military allies whose support he relied upon. It may also have served to distance him from the Buddhist establishment, with which he had a tense and sometimes violent relationship.

Question 5

How did King Rajasinghe I die?

Accepted Answer

Historical accounts differ, but most agree he died in 1593 from a wound received during a military engagement, possibly against a rebel chief. Some chronicles describe the wound as self-inflicted during combat; others attribute his death to illness following a campaign. He left no strong successor, and Sitawaka's power dissolved rapidly afterward.

Question 6

What primary sources describe the reign of Rajasinghe I?

Accepted Answer

The main sources are the Rajavaliya and the Chulavamsa, traditional Sri Lankan chronicles written in Pali and Sinhalese. Portuguese colonial records also provide a perspective on military encounters. All sources carry their own biases, so historians cross-reference them carefully when reconstructing events.

Question 7

Are there monuments or sites in Sri Lanka related to the Sitawaka kingdom?

Accepted Answer

Surviving monuments from the Sitawaka period are relatively scarce, as the capital changed hands repeatedly during and after the Portuguese wars. The Avissawella district retains some archaeological interest, and Colombo's national museums hold artefacts and manuscripts from this era. The region is less visited than the Cultural Triangle but holds genuine historical significance.

Question 8

How is King Rajasinghe I viewed in modern Sri Lankan history?

Accepted Answer

He is generally regarded as a significant anti-colonial figure, particularly for his persistent resistance to Portuguese expansion. However, his harsh treatment of Buddhist monks, political rivals, and family members complicates his legacy. Modern historiography tends to acknowledge both his military importance and the destructive aspects of his rule.
