Question 1

What is Draksha in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

Draksha is the Ayurvedic name for dried grape (Vitis vinifera), used medicinally for thousands of years across Sri Lanka and India. It is classified as a cooling, sweet herb and appears in classical texts as a tonic, digestive aid, and respiratory remedy. It is rarely used alone — most preparations combine Draksha with other herbs in compound formulas.

Question 2

What is Draksharishtaya used for?

Accepted Answer

Draksharishtaya is a fermented Ayurvedic liquid (arishta) made with dried grapes as the primary ingredient. It is traditionally used to support digestion, improve appetite, aid liver function, and restore strength during convalescence. Because it is fermented, it is considered more bioavailable than simple decoctions.

Question 3

What is Panchamuli Lagu Draksha?

Accepted Answer

Panchamuli Lagu Draksha is a classical compound formulation combining Draksha (dried grape) with five specific root herbs known as the lagu panchamula group. It is primarily used for respiratory conditions including coughs, bronchitis, and throat irritation. It is available in decoction (kwatha) and infusion (phanta) forms from licensed Sri Lankan manufacturers.

Question 4

Can diabetics take Draksha Ayurvedic medicines?

Accepted Answer

Draksha-based medicines, particularly arishta (fermented) preparations, contain natural sugars and small amounts of alcohol, which can influence blood glucose levels. People with diabetes should consult their physician and a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner before using these products. Dosage adjustments or alternative formulations may be recommended.

Question 5

Does Draksharishtaya contain alcohol?

Accepted Answer

Yes — arishta preparations like Draksharishtaya undergo natural fermentation, which produces a small percentage of alcohol, typically in the range of 5–10%. This is an inherent feature of the classical arishta dosage form, not an additive. Those who avoid alcohol for medical or religious reasons should discuss this with their healthcare provider.

Question 6

Which Sri Lankan brands make Draksha Ayurvedic products?

Accepted Answer

Several reputable manufacturers produce Draksha-based formulations in Sri Lanka, including Gampaha Wickramarachchi Ayurveda Institute, Link Natural Products, Siddhalepa, Wickramarachchi Labs, and Ayurova Biotech. Look for products registered with the Sri Lanka Department of Ayurveda, identifiable by a registration number on the label.

Question 7

How is Draksha different from ordinary raisins?

Accepted Answer

Medicinally, Draksha refers specifically to dried Vitis vinifera grapes processed and sourced according to Ayurvedic quality standards, not ordinary commercial raisins. The therapeutic preparations use the fruit in precise quantities combined with other herbs and processed through decoction or fermentation — a very different context from eating raisins as a snack.

Question 8

Where can I find Ayurvedic Draksha products online in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Draksha preparations are available through licensed Ayurvedic pharmacies, hospital dispensaries at government Ayurvedic institutions, and online wellness retailers that carry Sri Lankan Ayurvedic brands. Lakpura stocks a selection of Draksha products from verified manufacturers, with international shipping available.
