Question 1

What is Diospyros melanoxylon used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Ayurvedic practice, Diospyros melanoxylon is used primarily for its astringent and anti-inflammatory properties. The bark is prepared as a decoction for digestive complaints, while the fruit and leaves have been applied in treatments for oral health issues and skin conditions. It is formally catalogued among Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic medicinal plants.

Question 2

Where does Diospyros melanoxylon grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The species is most common in Sri Lanka's dry zone — particularly the North Central, Northern, and Eastern provinces — where it grows in scrub forests and dry deciduous woodland. It is found in and around protected areas such as Wilpattu National Park and in remnant forest patches near ancient settlements.

Question 3

Is Diospyros melanoxylon the same as ebony?

Accepted Answer

It belongs to the ebony family (Ebenaceae) and the genus Diospyros, which includes true commercial ebonies like Diospyros ebenum. However, Diospyros melanoxylon is not classified as a premium ebony; its heartwood is dark and dense but is typically used for smaller woodcraft rather than fine furniture. It is primarily valued in Sri Lanka for its medicinal properties.

Question 4

What does Diospyros melanoxylon look like?

Accepted Answer

It is a deciduous tree with rough, dark-grey bark that breaks into irregular plates with age. The leaves are simple, oblong, and leathery, and the tree bears small pale flowers followed by fleshy, pale yellow-green drupe fruits with a persistent calyx. In dry-zone habitats it is often smaller and more gnarled than specimens in wetter conditions.

Question 5

What plant family does Diospyros melanoxylon belong to?

Accepted Answer

It belongs to the family Ebenaceae. This is the same family as true ebonies and persimmons, all of which share the genus Diospyros. The family is characterised by hard, dense heartwood and astringent fruits due to high tannin content.

Question 6

Is Diospyros melanoxylon endangered or protected in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Like many dry-zone tree species, Diospyros melanoxylon faces habitat pressure from deforestation and agricultural expansion in Sri Lanka's northern and eastern lowlands. While it is not always listed under strict legal protection as a single species, it benefits from conservation within protected forest areas and national parks where dry-zone woodland habitats are maintained.

Question 7

Can visitors learn about Ayurvedic plants like this during a Sri Lanka trip?

Accepted Answer

Yes — Sri Lanka offers a wide range of experiences for those interested in traditional plant medicine, from Ayurvedic wellness retreats and herbal gardens to guided nature walks in forest reserves. Many Ayurvedic centres will introduce visitors to locally grown medicinal plants and explain their classical uses in Sinhala medical tradition.
