Question 1

What is Debregeasia wallichiana ssp. ceylanica?

Accepted Answer

It is a plant subspecies native to or closely associated with Sri Lanka, belonging to the family Urticaceae. It is catalogued in Sri Lanka's ayurvedic medicinal plant register under the identifier LK94005694. The plant typically grows as a shrub or small tree in moist, shaded habitats such as forest margins and stream banks.

Question 2

Is Debregeasia wallichiana ssp. ceylanica endemic to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The subspecies designation 'ceylanica' suggests a distinct variant associated specifically with Sri Lanka. While the broader species Debregeasia wallichiana has a wider distribution across tropical Asia, this subspecies is linked to the island's unique botanical heritage and is catalogued accordingly in national plant records.

Question 3

What are the medicinal uses of Debregeasia wallichiana in ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

The plant is included in Sri Lanka's catalogue of ayurvedic medicinal plants, indicating recognition within traditional practice. Related species in the Debregeasia genus have been studied for potential anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties in various regional traditions. Specific applications should be confirmed with a qualified ayurvedic practitioner.

Question 4

Where can I find Debregeasia wallichiana ssp. ceylanica in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

This subspecies is associated with the moist, mid-elevation habitats of Sri Lanka's wet zone and central highlands. It is likely found in forest understorey areas, along stream banks, and at forest margins where humidity is consistently high. Montane and transitional forest zones offer the most suitable conditions.

Question 5

What plant family does Debregeasia belong to?

Accepted Answer

Debregeasia is a genus in the family Urticaceae, commonly known as the nettle family. Members of this family are widespread across tropical and temperate regions and include both economically and medicinally important plants. The family is characterised by simple, often toothed leaves and small, inconspicuous flowers.

Question 6

How is Sri Lanka's ayurvedic plant catalogue organised?

Accepted Answer

Each plant in Sri Lanka's national ayurvedic catalogue is assigned a unique alphanumeric identifier, such as LK94005694 for this subspecies. These records are maintained by institutions including the Department of Ayurveda and botanical gardens, and increasingly made available through digital databases. The system helps researchers, practitioners, and conservationists track and study the island's medicinal flora.

Question 7

Why is documenting plant subspecies important for conservation?

Accepted Answer

Subspecies often represent genetically or morphologically distinct populations that have adapted to specific local conditions. If restricted to a small geographic area such as Sri Lanka, they may face extinction without being formally recognised as threatened. Documenting them ensures they appear in conservation assessments and can benefit from legal or institutional protection.
