Question 1

What is Cullen corylifolium used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Ayurvedic medicine, Cullen corylifolium — particularly its seeds — is most widely used to treat skin pigmentation disorders such as vitiligo and psoriasis. It is also used in formulations targeting respiratory complaints and as a general tonic. The seeds contain psoralens and bakuchiol, which are the primary bioactive compounds behind these applications.

Question 2

What is another name for Cullen corylifolium?

Accepted Answer

Cullen corylifolium is commonly known as Bakuchi or Babchi in Sanskrit-derived nomenclature, and it is sometimes listed under the older synonym Psoralea corylifolia in older botanical and pharmacological texts. In Sri Lanka it is recognised under its current accepted scientific name in the Ayurvedic medicinal plant catalogue.

Question 3

Is Cullen corylifolium safe to use?

Accepted Answer

The plant contains furocoumarins that are photosensitising, meaning use can increase sensitivity to sunlight and raise the risk of phototoxic reactions if sun exposure is not managed. It should only be used under the guidance of a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner. Pregnant women and those with photosensitivity conditions are particularly advised to seek professional advice before use.

Question 4

What is bakuchiol and where does it come from?

Accepted Answer

Bakuchiol is a naturally occurring flavonoid found in the seeds of Cullen corylifolium. It has gained significant interest in modern cosmetic science as a plant-based alternative to retinol, valued for its antioxidant and skin-smoothing properties. Unlike the psoralens also present in the plant, bakuchiol is not photosensitising, which makes it attractive for topical cosmetic use.

Question 5

Where does Cullen corylifolium grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant grows naturally in the dry and intermediate zones of Sri Lanka, typically in open scrubland, roadsides, and disturbed ground in the north-central and northern lowland regions. It tolerates well-drained, drier soils and is also cultivated in dedicated Ayurvedic herb gardens across the island.

Question 6

What part of Cullen corylifolium is used medicinally?

Accepted Answer

The seeds are the most medicinally important part of the plant, and are used in powdered form, as an oil extract, and as an ingredient in compound Ayurvedic formulations. The leaves and roots have some traditional applications in local medicine but attract far less pharmacological attention than the seeds.

Question 7

Is Cullen corylifolium the same as Psoralea corylifolia?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Psoralea corylifolia is an older botanical synonym for Cullen corylifolium. The plant was reclassified into the Cullen genus following modern phylogenetic revisions of the Fabaceae family. Many Ayurvedic texts and pharmacopoeias still use the name Psoralea corylifolia, so both names refer to the same species.
