Araliya Beach Resort & Spa

Unawatuna, Sri Lanka

Araliya Beach Resort & Spa is a high-rise beach resort at Yaddehimulla, Unawatuna, with an infinity pool on its 12th floor and sea-facing rooms, apartments and suites. Run by Araliya Resorts & Spas, it has a beach club with its own pool, more than ten restaurants, bars and lounges, a spa, a gym, a kids' club and a PADI dive school, and Galle Fort is about ten minutes away by road.

Which room should I book?

Every room has air conditioning and a ceiling fan, Wi-Fi, a minibar, a safe, tea and coffee making facilities, bathrobes and slippers, and a bathroom with both a bathtub and a separate shower cubicle. The nine names below are the ones you will see when you choose a room; they run from the standard rooms to the two top suites.

  • Deluxe – the resort's standard room, 46 square metres with ocean views. It sleeps two, or three adults with an extra bed, and up to two children can share with two adults.
  • Horizon – a room category on the resort's contract with us that is not described on Araliya's own website. If the view or floor matters to you, ask us to confirm with the resort what a Horizon room gives you before you book. It takes up to three adults, or two adults with up to two children.
  • One Bedroom Apartment – a 92-square-metre apartment with a bedroom, a separate living space, a kitchenette and a balcony with ocean views, for guests who want room to spread out or to make their own meals. It takes up to three adults, or two adults with up to two children.
  • Two Bedrooms Apartment – the family apartment at 138 square metres, with two interconnected bedrooms, a living space, a kitchenette and a balcony with sea views. The resort can add extra beds for up to six people; when booked here it takes up to four adults, or two adults with two children, so ask us if you need beds for five or six.
  • Premier – a step up from the Deluxe at 52 square metres, with ocean views and walls hung with vivid paintings of Sri Lanka's wildlife and landscapes. It sleeps up to three adults with an extra bed, or two adults with up to two children.
  • Studio – a 92-square-metre open-plan studio with a pantry kitchenette (two-door fridge and cooking facilities), a washing machine and views straight over Unawatuna's beach and sea. It suits a couple on a longer stay and takes up to three adults, or two adults with up to two children.
  • Araliya Suite (Junior Suite) – the 138-square-metre Araliya Suite, with clearly separated living and sleeping spaces, artistic décor, a two-door fridge, a washing machine, a balcony and a large bathroom with a separate shower and bathtub. As booked here it takes up to three adults, or two adults with up to three children.
  • Royal Suite – one of the resort's two largest suites at 184 square metres, with ocean and sunset views and space for a family plus a maid. As booked here it takes up to three adults, or two adults with up to three children.
  • Presidential Suite – also 184 square metres, with two bedrooms each with its own bathroom with a separate shower and bathtub, clearly divided living spaces furnished with carved wood, chandeliers and bright artwork, a fully equipped kitchenette with a washing machine, and a separate maid's room with its own bathroom. As booked here it takes up to three adults, or two adults with up to three children.

What is the food like?

There is a lot of choice. Olives is the international restaurant for breakfast, lunch and dinner and Saffron serves Indian food, while SharkBite is a seafood restaurant and the Tiki Bar and Beach Club Bar are down by the sand. Té Lounge, the Sky Lounge and the bar at the 12th-floor infinity pool are for drinks with a view, Dutch Fort and Bay View open in the evenings, and the 555One night club runs late. Room service is available around the clock, and kids' menus and babysitting can be arranged.

What is there to do at the resort?

Swim in the pool at the beach club or ride the lift to the infinity pool, bar and sun deck on the 12th floor. The resort has a spa, a fitness centre, a kids' club and children's play area, and daily yoga and meditation sessions. Divers can train or go out with the resort's PADI-approved dive school, and other water sports can be arranged on the beach.

What is nearby?

The resort is on the beach at Yaddehimulla, along the coast from the bay of Unawatuna, and the white Japanese Peace Pagoda on Rumassala hill, above the far end of the bay, is a short drive away. The ramparts, churches and lanes of Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are about nine minutes' drive away. Along the coast to the east, the stilt fishermen of Koggala and the boat trips on Koggala Lagoon make a good afternoon out, and whale watching trips leave from the south coast in season.

How do I get from the airport to Araliya Beach Resort & Spa?

Unawatuna is just south-east of Galle, reached from Bandaranaike International Airport along the Southern Expressway, and we can arrange a private car and driver to take you from the airport to the resort. By train, the coastal line from Colombo stops at Unawatuna station, close to the resort.

Who is Araliya Beach Resort & Spa best suited to?

It suits families and groups who want a big, lively resort with everything on site, from a kids' club to a night club, and travellers who want an apartment with a kitchen for a longer beach stay. Those after a small, quiet hideaway should look elsewhere. For more choice in the area see our places to stay in Unawatuna, or the other Araliya Resorts & Spas hotels.
