Aliya Resort & Spa is a Thema Collection resort outside Sigiriya whose long infinity pool looks across paddy fields and scrub to Sigiriya and Pidurangala rocks. Its rooms range from airy Deluxe rooms with balconies to wooden chalets built from recycled shipping pallets on the edge of the jungle and two-bedroom suites with their own pools, and it has four restaurants and an Ayurvedic spa run by AyurVie.
Every room has air conditioning and a fan, free Wi-Fi, a minibar, a safe, satellite television, a writing desk and Ayurveda-inspired toiletries by AyurVie. The four names below are the ones you will see when you choose a room.
Families and groups who need more space can ask for interconnecting rooms, which Aliya offers in the Deluxe, Deluxe Attic and Wooden Chalet categories; mention it when you book so adjoining rooms can be held together.
There are four places to eat. Alaka serves Asian, Sri Lankan and Western dishes through the day, Makara is an evening restaurant for Chinese fusion cooking, and Migara is the main restaurant and bar, with coffee, cocktails and live jazz on some days. Nagula, overlooking the paddy fields, is the resort's Sri Lankan restaurant, with live cooking and a small paddy museum; book a table there in advance.
The infinity pool, with Sigiriya and Pidurangala rocks on the horizon, is the centrepiece. The AyurVie spa offers Ayurvedic treatments such as herbal oil body and head massages, facials, foot reflexology and herbal steam baths, with an Ayurvedic doctor on hand to advise on what suits you, and there are yoga and meditation sessions. The resort also arranges birdwatching walks, cookery demonstrations with garden visits, e-bike tours, night safaris with a naturalist, pottery demonstrations, visits to a paper recycling workshop, kite flying and cocktail-making sessions.
The climb to the top of Sigiriya Rock Fortress is best started early in the morning before the heat builds, and the sunrise walk up Pidurangala Rock gives the classic view back across to Sigiriya. The painted caves of the Dambulla Cave Temple make an easy half-day trip, and the ruined medieval capital at Polonnaruwa a full one. For elephants, jeep safaris run to Minneriya National Park, Kaudulla National Park or Hurulu Eco Park, depending on where the herds are gathering in the season, and the forest monastery ruins at Ritigala are a quieter outing.
Sigiriya lies in the dry-zone plains of the Cultural Triangle, a drive of several hours north-east of Bandaranaike International Airport. The simplest way to arrive is a private transfer from Colombo airport to Aliya Resort & Spa, which takes you all the way to the door.
It suits families, couples and small groups who want a full-service resort with space, a big pool and a choice of restaurants as a base for two or three days of sightseeing in the Cultural Triangle. Families do well in the Deluxe Attic rooms or the two-bedroom suites, while couples looking for something more rustic should pick a Wooden Chalet. For more choice in the area see our places to stay in Sigiriya, or the other Thema Collection hotels around the island.
