Question 1

Is Solanum tuberosum used in ayurvedic medicine in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Solanum tuberosum is included in Sri Lanka's catalogue of ayurvedic medicinal plants. It is primarily used topically — raw potato juice or slices are applied to minor burns and skin irritations — and internally as a cooling, easily digestible food in appropriate preparations.

Question 2

What part of the potato plant is used in traditional medicine?

Accepted Answer

The tuber is the most commonly used part, both as a food and as a source of fresh juice for topical applications. Green parts of the plant and sprouted tubers are avoided due to elevated levels of solanine, an alkaloid that can be harmful in significant quantities.

Question 3

What does Solanum tuberosum taste like according to Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In classical ayurvedic terminology, Solanum tuberosum is categorised as predominantly sweet (madhura rasa), with a cooling potency and heavy, slightly oily qualities. These properties make it suitable for pacifying Pitta-type imbalances, though it may increase Kapha if consumed in excess.

Question 4

Where is the potato grown in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Commercial potato farming in Sri Lanka is concentrated in the Nuwara Eliya and Badulla districts in the central highlands, where the cool temperatures and adequate rainfall recreate conditions similar to the crop's Andean origins. Cultivation typically occurs above 1,200 metres elevation.

Question 5

Can raw potato juice help with skin conditions?

Accepted Answer

Raw potato juice has a long history of use in Sri Lankan and broader South Asian folk medicine as a topical remedy for minor burns, sunburn, and inflammatory skin irritations. Its cooling and mildly anti-inflammatory properties are widely recognised, though it is not a substitute for medical treatment for serious skin conditions.

Question 6

What are the main nutrients in Solanum tuberosum?

Accepted Answer

Potato tubers are a useful source of complex carbohydrates, vitamin C, potassium, vitamin B6, and dietary fibre. They also contain antioxidant compounds such as chlorogenic acid, particularly in pigmented varieties. The nutrient profile is best preserved when potatoes are boiled or steamed with the skin on.

Question 7

Are there any precautions when using potato in ayurvedic practice?

Accepted Answer

Ayurvedic practitioners generally advise people with a Kapha-dominant constitution or those managing weight-related conditions to use potato cautiously, as its heavy and sweet qualities can aggravate Kapha. Anyone considering potato-based remedies for a specific health condition should seek guidance from a qualified ayurvedic physician.
