Question 1

What is Solanum mauritianum used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lankan Ayurvedic practice, Solanum mauritianum is used in traditional formulations targeting respiratory conditions, fever, and inflammation. Various parts of the plant — including leaves and roots — are incorporated into compound preparations under the guidance of qualified practitioners. Due to the plant's alkaloid content, self-medication is not advisable.

Question 2

Is Solanum mauritianum found in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Solanum mauritianum is naturalised across much of Sri Lanka, particularly in the central highlands and wet-zone foothills at elevations between around 500 and 2,000 metres. It commonly grows along roadsides, tea estate boundaries, and forest margins. While widespread, it is catalogued as a medicinal plant within the country's Ayurvedic tradition.

Question 3

Is Solanum mauritianum toxic or safe to eat?

Accepted Answer

The berries and other parts of Solanum mauritianum contain steroidal alkaloids and are toxic if consumed raw. The plant's woolly hairs can also irritate skin and eyes on contact. Medicinal preparations are only used under expert Ayurvedic supervision, involving specific processing methods to manage these risks.

Question 4

What does Solanum mauritianum look like?

Accepted Answer

Solanum mauritianum grows as a shrub or small tree, typically reaching two to four metres tall. Its most distinctive feature is its large, grey-green leaves covered in dense, soft hairs on both surfaces. Pale violet flowers appear in clusters, followed by small round berries that mature from yellow-green to yellow.

Question 5

What bioactive compounds are found in Solanum mauritianum?

Accepted Answer

The plant is rich in steroidal alkaloids, with solasodine being the most studied. Solasodine has attracted scientific interest for its antimicrobial properties and potential as a precursor in pharmaceutical synthesis. Research into other phytochemical constituents, including antifungal compounds, is ongoing, though findings remain at an investigational stage.

Question 6

Is Solanum mauritianum an invasive weed in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Solanum mauritianum is considered invasive in many parts of the world due to its rapid spread on disturbed ground. In Sri Lanka, it is monitored in conservation areas where it can compete with native plant regeneration. Despite this ecological profile, it retains a recognised place in Sri Lankan Ayurvedic medicine.

Question 7

Where can I learn about Ayurvedic plants while visiting Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka has numerous Ayurvedic gardens, spice farms, and herbal medicine centres where visitors can learn about medicinal plants in their cultural context. Guided walks in protected areas like Sinharaja Forest Reserve also offer direct encounters with native and naturalised medicinal flora. Lakpura can arrange itineraries that include authentic, educational Ayurvedic experiences.
