Question 1

What is Pouteria campechiana used for in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lanka, Pouteria campechiana is included in the official catalogue of Ayurvedic medicinal plants. Various parts of the tree — particularly the bark, leaves, and seed oil — have traditional applications related to fever management and skin care. The ripe fruit is also eaten for its nutritional content.

Question 2

What does canistel (egg fruit) taste like?

Accepted Answer

Canistel has a dry, dense flesh similar in texture to a hard-boiled egg yolk, with a flavour that is mildly sweet and slightly caramel-like. It is quite filling despite its modest size and does not have the juicy quality of most tropical fruits.

Question 3

Where can I find Pouteria campechiana growing in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The tree grows mainly in home gardens and mixed smallholder plots in the lowland wet zone and intermediate zone, particularly in the Southern and Western provinces. It prefers elevations below around 700 metres and warm, humid conditions.

Question 4

Is canistel native to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

No, Pouteria campechiana is native to Central America. It was introduced to South and Southeast Asia — including Sri Lanka — through historical trade routes and horticultural exchange, and has since naturalised in many tropical garden settings on the island.

Question 5

What are the nutritional benefits of eating canistel?

Accepted Answer

Canistel is a good source of beta-carotene, niacin, vitamin C, iron, and calcium. It is energy-dense due to its natural sugars and starch content, making it a nutritious supplementary food, particularly in areas where diverse fresh produce is limited.

Question 6

What family does Pouteria campechiana belong to?

Accepted Answer

Pouteria campechiana belongs to the family Sapotaceae. This family includes several other economically important tropical trees, among them the sapodilla (Manilkara zapota) and various species that produce commercially valuable latex and timber.

Question 7

Is there clinical evidence supporting Ayurvedic uses of Pouteria campechiana?

Accepted Answer

Traditional use of Pouteria campechiana in Ayurveda is documented, but robust clinical evidence for specific therapeutic claims remains limited. Research into the plant's phytochemical properties is ongoing, and anyone with a medical concern should consult a qualified practitioner rather than relying solely on traditional sources.
