Hussein Ameena's debut collection weaves together stories that explore the theme of identity against the backdrop of Sri Lanka's complex ethnic and socio-economic landscape. Like the intricate mosaic art form of zillij, with its hand-cut tiles fitting into a larger whole, these interconnected tales reveal universal human experiences within a distinctly local context. The stories transcend their Sri Lankan setting to speak to broader questions of belonging and self-understanding. This award-winning collection captures the nuance of a nation in transition through intimate, carefully crafted narratives.
