Accepted Answer

Yes, the unripe fruit is a common vegetable in Sri Lankan cooking. It is typically prepared as a coconut-milk curry or a dry stir-fry and is valued for its mild flavour and easy digestibility. Only the unripe fruit is normally eaten; the ripe fruit and its seeds are not consumed as food.

Question 5

Where is snake gourd cultivated in Sri Lanka?

Trichosanthes anguina is grown throughout Sri Lanka's lowland and mid-country regions in home gardens and small farms. It performs best in warm, humid conditions with full sunlight and is commonly cultivated in the North Central, Southern, and Western provinces.

Question 6

What does the snake gourd plant look like?

Accepted Answer

It is a climbing vine with heart-shaped leaves and distinctive white flowers with delicately fringed petals. The fruit is extremely elongated — sometimes over a metre in length — pale green when young and turning orange-red at maturity. The unusual shape of the fruit is the reason for the common name 'snake gourd'.

Question 7

Is snake gourd good for health?

Accepted Answer

As a vegetable, snake gourd is low in calories, high in water content, and a source of dietary fibre and certain micronutrients, making it a nutritious addition to a balanced diet. Traditional Ayurvedic medicine also attributes cooling, digestive, and anti-inflammatory properties to the plant, though most of these claims remain under scientific investigation rather than fully validated by clinical trials.
