Question 1

Which national park in Sri Lanka has the most leopards?

Accepted Answer

Yala National Park Block 1 is considered to have one of the highest densities of leopards relative to habitat area anywhere in the world. Consistent sightings are recorded throughout the year during the park's open season, roughly February to August. Wilpattu and Horton Plains also support leopard populations but sightings are less predictable.

Question 2

What is the Elephant Gathering in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The Elephant Gathering refers to the seasonal congregation of hundreds of wild Asian elephants around the Minneriya and Kaudulla tanks in Sri Lanka's north-central province. As water levels drop during the dry season between July and October, elephants converge on the exposed grasslands to graze and drink. It is widely regarded as the largest single gathering of Asian elephants on the planet.

Question 3

Do I need to book national park entry tickets in advance?

Accepted Answer

Entry tickets can be purchased at most park gates, but booking in advance is strongly recommended during peak season to avoid waiting at busy entrances like Yala. Lakpura can arrange tickets, jeep hire, and naturalist guides as part of a day or overnight excursion.

Question 4

Is Wilpattu or Yala better for leopard sightings?

Accepted Answer

Yala Block 1 consistently produces more frequent and reliable leopard sightings due to its open terrain and high leopard density. Wilpattu offers a more secluded experience with far fewer vehicles, and leopard sightings do occur, but patience is required. The choice often depends on whether you prioritise sighting frequency or a quieter atmosphere.

Question 5

Which Sri Lanka national park is best for birdwatching?

Accepted Answer

Kumana National Park is the top choice for serious birders, particularly between April and July when large waterbird colonies breed at its mangrove lagoon. Bundala is outstanding for migratory waders and flamingos between November and March. Sinharaja Forest Reserve, though a biosphere reserve rather than a national park, is essential for endemic forest birds.

Question 6

Can I visit a national park without a guided jeep?

Accepted Answer

No. Sri Lankan national parks require all visitors to enter in a registered jeep and be accompanied by a licensed tracker. Self-drive entry is not permitted. This requirement applies to all parks managed by the Department of Wildlife Conservation and is enforced at park gates.

Question 7

What is the best national park in Sri Lanka for families with children?

Accepted Answer

Udawalawe National Park is widely considered the most family-friendly option because elephant sightings are almost guaranteed year-round, the terrain is open and easy to navigate, and the drive time from the south coast is manageable. Minneriya is another good choice during the Gathering season, when the sheer scale of the elephant herds is immediately impressive.

Question 8

Is camping allowed in Sri Lankan national parks?

Accepted Answer

Overnight camping is permitted in a small number of parks, including Kumana and Yala, at designated sites. Arrangements must be made in advance through the Department of Wildlife Conservation or a licensed operator. Camping is subject to availability and park regulations, which can change seasonally.
