Accepted Answer

Memecylon hookeri is catalogued among Sri Lanka's ayurvedic medicinal plants, where species in the Memecylon genus are traditionally associated with astringent properties. Question 5

How is Sri Lanka's ayurvedic plant heritage being preserved?

Accepted Answer

The Sri Lankan government maintains official catalogues of medicinal plants through the Department of Ayurveda and the National Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya. Protected forest areas and ongoing ethnobotanical surveys by universities and research institutions help document and conserve species like Memecylon hookeri before traditional knowledge is lost.

Question 6

Are there tours in Sri Lanka focused on ayurveda or medicinal plants?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Sri Lanka offers a range of wellness and cultural experiences connected to its ayurvedic tradition, including visits to ayurvedic centres, spice gardens, and forest walks in biodiversity-rich areas. These experiences are most commonly found in the hill country, wet zone, and around cultural heritage sites in the central province.

Question 7

What other medicinal plants are found in Sri Lanka's ayurvedic catalogue?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka's ayurvedic pharmacopoeia includes hundreds of native plants such as Pongamia pinnata, Acacia chundra, and various spice plants including clove (Syzygium aromaticum) and black pepper. Many of these are also economically significant crops with long histories of trade and cultivation on the island.
