Question 1

What is Spermacoce hispida used for in ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lankan and South Asian ayurvedic tradition, Spermacoce hispida is primarily used for its diuretic and cooling properties. It has been applied to support urinary tract health, reduce inflammation, and manage fever. Crushed leaves are also used topically as a poultice on minor wounds.

Question 2

Where does Spermacoce hispida grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant grows widely in the lowland and coastal regions of Sri Lanka, favouring disturbed habitats such as roadsides, paddy field margins, and open grasslands. It tolerates poor soils and is a common sight in rural agricultural landscapes.

Question 3

Is Spermacoce hispida the same as a weed?

Accepted Answer

Spermacoce hispida is technically considered a weed in agricultural contexts because it colonises disturbed and cultivated ground readily. However, its recognised medicinal properties mean it has historically been tolerated or intentionally preserved at field edges by Sri Lankan farmers.

Question 4

What family does Spermacoce hispida belong to?

Accepted Answer

It belongs to the Rubiaceae family, one of the largest flowering plant families in the world. Other notable members of this family include coffee (Coffea arabica) and several important timber and medicinal trees found across tropical Asia.

Question 5

Is there scientific evidence supporting the medicinal use of Spermacoce hispida?

Accepted Answer

Preliminary phytochemical studies have identified bioactive compounds — including flavonoids and alkaloids — consistent with the plant's traditional uses. However, large-scale clinical trials are lacking, and the scientific evidence base remains at an early stage.

Question 6

What does the name hispida mean in botany?

Accepted Answer

The species epithet hispida comes from Latin and means rough or covered in stiff bristles. It refers to the coarse, bristle-like hairs that cover the stems and leaves of the plant, which is one of its most recognisable physical characteristics.

Question 7

Can I see traditional ayurvedic plants during a tour of Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes, several experiences across Sri Lanka offer direct engagement with traditional medicinal plants. Ayurvedic gardens, village herb walks, and wellness retreats commonly feature plants such as Spermacoce hispida. Destinations like Sinharaja Forest Reserve and rural village stays in the hill country are particularly well-suited to ethnobotany interests.
