Question 1

What is Marsdenia tenacissima used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

Marsdenia tenacissima is used in Ayurvedic practice primarily for respiratory conditions such as chronic cough, asthma, and bronchitis. It is also referenced in formulations addressing inflammation and fever. In India it has been studied in compound immunostimulant preparations, though these applications differ somewhat from classical Sri Lankan Ayurvedic use.

Question 2

Where does Marsdenia tenacissima grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant grows naturally in moist lowland and mid-elevation forest margins across Sri Lanka, climbing over other vegetation in suitable habitats. It is found in both the wet zone and transitional ecological zones of the island. Cultivation in agroforestry and home garden settings is also possible with appropriate support structures.

Question 3

Is Marsdenia tenacissima safe to use at home?

Accepted Answer

Like most Ayurvedic medicinal plants, Marsdenia tenacissima preparations carry risks if used without proper guidance. Dosage, preparation method, and potential interactions with other medicines depend on individual health factors. It is strongly recommended to consult a registered Ayurvedic physician before using any preparation containing this plant.

Question 4

What active compounds are found in Marsdenia tenacissima?

Accepted Answer

Research has identified pregnane-type steroidal glycosides called marsdenosides as the principal bioactive compounds, along with alkaloids, flavonoids, and tannins. The marsdenosides have been studied for potential cytotoxic and immunomodulatory activity. This phytochemical profile supports many of the plant's traditional therapeutic claims, though clinical evidence in humans remains limited.

Question 5

Is Marsdenia tenacissima the same as the Indian herb 'Jeevani'?

Accepted Answer

Marsdenia tenacissima is a key ingredient in some Indian compound formulations associated with immunostimulant and adaptogenic properties, sometimes linked to the commercial preparation Jeevani. However, Jeevani also contains other plant species and is a proprietary formulation rather than the raw plant itself. In Sri Lanka, the plant is used independently within Ayurvedic compound preparations rather than under that specific brand context.

Question 6

How is Marsdenia tenacissima different from other Sri Lankan medicinal climbers?

Accepted Answer

Marsdenia tenacissima is distinguished by its exceptionally tough fibrous stems, small clustered flowers, and the presence of paired follicle fruits typical of the Apocynaceae family. Its alkaloid and pregnane glycoside chemistry sets it apart from other climbing medicinal plants. Very few other Sri Lankan medicinal climbers share its specific respiratory and potential immunomodulatory profile in Ayurvedic literature.

Question 7

Does Marsdenia tenacissima appear in Sri Lanka's official medicinal plant catalog?

Accepted Answer

Yes, it is formally catalogued as an Ayurvedic medicinal plant recognised within Sri Lanka's indigenous medicine system. The plant is assigned an official reference code under the national Ayurvedic plant documentation framework maintained by the Department of Ayurveda. This status supports its use in licensed Ayurvedic manufacturing and clinical practice within the country.
