Question 1

Which is the tallest lighthouse in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Dondra Head Lighthouse, located at the southernmost tip of Sri Lanka near Matara, is the tallest lighthouse in Sri Lanka and in South Asia, standing at approximately 49 metres. It was constructed by the British in 1889 and remains an active navigational aid.

Question 2

Is Dondra Head Lighthouse open to visitors?

Accepted Answer

Access to the Dondra Head Lighthouse compound is subject to the discretion of the managing authority and may be permitted on certain days. Even when the tower itself is closed, the surrounding headland and exterior of the structure are freely accessible and worth visiting for the coastal views.

Question 3

How many lighthouses are there in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka has around a dozen active lighthouses and several decommissioned structures distributed along its coastline. The most significant include Dondra Head, Barberyn, Great Basses, Little Basses, Point Pedro, Colombo, and Trincomalee, though smaller beacons and marker lights are found throughout the island's ports and harbours.

Question 4

Can you visit the Great Basses Lighthouse?

Accepted Answer

The Great Basses Lighthouse sits on a remote offshore reef and is not open to public visitors. It can be seen from dive boats and fishing vessels operating in the area around Kirinda, and the surrounding reef is a recognised dive site. Sea conditions permitting, boat trips in the area may pass close enough for photography.

Question 5

What is the oldest lighthouse in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The Barberyn Lighthouse near Beruwala on the western coast is among the oldest surviving lighthouses in Sri Lanka, with origins traced to the colonial period. The site marks a harbour used by Arab traders for centuries before European contact, giving it considerable historical significance beyond its navigational role.

Question 6

Are Sri Lanka's lighthouses lit at night?

Accepted Answer

Yes, all active lighthouses in Sri Lanka emit a characteristic pattern of flashes at night that mariners use for identification and position fixing. Each lighthouse has a distinct flash sequence recorded in nautical charts. Watching a lighthouse at dusk from a nearby beach or headland, as the light begins its rhythm, is a simple but memorable experience.

Question 7

What is the best way to see Sri Lanka's southern lighthouses?

Accepted Answer

The most practical approach is a self-drive or private car along the southern coastal road, which links Colombo to Matara and beyond. A dedicated day trip from a Galle or Mirissa base allows time at Dondra Head and the surrounding Matara area. Adding a boat trip from Kirinda opens up views of the Great Basses and Little Basses offshore structures.
