Question 1

Are there flamingos in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes, both greater and lesser flamingos visit Sri Lanka as seasonal migrants, mainly between October and March. Bundala National Park on the southern coast is the most reliable and accessible location, while the Mannar lagoons in the northwest also attract significant numbers.

Question 2

What is the best time to visit Bundala National Park for flamingos?

Accepted Answer

November through January is generally the peak period, when migratory flocks are at their largest and lagoon water levels are ideal for feeding. Early-morning visits during these months offer the best activity and lighting conditions.

Question 3

How far is Bundala National Park from Colombo?

Accepted Answer

Bundala is around 245 km from Colombo, roughly a four-to-five-hour drive using the Southern Expressway. Most visitors combine the trip with nearby attractions such as Udawalawe National Park or the Tangalle coast.

Question 4

What is the difference between greater and lesser flamingos?

Accepted Answer

Greater flamingos are noticeably larger, with pale-pink plumage and a kinked pink-and-black bill. Lesser flamingos are smaller and deeper pink overall, with a dark-crimson bill. Both species can appear in mixed flocks at Bundala, and binoculars are needed to separate them reliably at a distance.

Question 5

Can I see flamingos at Yala National Park?

Accepted Answer

Flamingos are not a regular feature of Yala, which focuses more on leopard, elephant, and forest wildlife. Bundala, which borders the western edge of the Yala complex, is the designated flamingo-watching site in that part of the south and is usually visited as a separate morning excursion.

Question 6

Do I need a guide to enter Bundala National Park?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Like all Sri Lankan national parks, Bundala requires visitors to enter in a registered jeep with an approved tracker or naturalist guide. Independent walking access to the lagoon areas is not permitted. Lakpura can arrange a full guided flamingo excursion with transport from your accommodation.

Question 7

What other birds can I see alongside flamingos at Bundala?

Accepted Answer

Bundala regularly records painted storks, Eurasian spoonbills, pelicans, several species of terns, and a range of migratory waders including bar-tailed and black-tailed godwits. Over 200 bird species have been logged in the park, making it one of Sri Lanka's most productive waterbird sites.
