Question 1

How much does it cost to enter Peradeniya Botanical Gardens?

Accepted Answer

Entry fees at Peradeniya differ for foreign nationals and Sri Lankan citizens, with higher rates applying to international visitors. Lakpura offers pre-booked entrance tickets that include current fee information. Fees are set by the Department of National Botanic Gardens and are subject to periodic revision.

Question 2

How long does it take to walk around Peradeniya Botanical Gardens?

Accepted Answer

A comfortable visit covering the main highlights — the Royal Palm Avenue, the Giant Fig, the Orchid House, and the spice section — typically takes two to three hours. Those with a deeper interest in botany or who want to explore quieter corners of the 147-acre site may spend up to half a day.

Question 3

Is Hakgala Botanical Garden worth visiting?

Accepted Answer

Hakgala offers a genuinely different experience from Peradeniya, with montane species, a well-maintained rose garden, and immediate access to surrounding nature reserve forest. It is quieter than Peradeniya and pairs well with a stay in Nuwara Eliya. Visitors who enjoy highland scenery and cooler temperatures tend to find it highly rewarding.

Question 4

Can I visit Peradeniya Botanical Gardens without a guide?

Accepted Answer

Yes — the gardens are clearly laid out with signposted paths, and most specimen trees and plant collections carry identification labels. Guided tours are available at the main entrance for those who want detailed botanical or historical context, but independent exploration is straightforward.

Question 5

What is the best botanical garden in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Peradeniya is the largest, most diverse, and most historically significant of Sri Lanka's botanical gardens, making it the top choice for most visitors. Hakgala is preferred by those interested in montane flora and a quieter atmosphere, while Henarathgoda appeals to visitors with a specific interest in the history of tropical economic crops such as rubber.

Question 6

Are Peradeniya Botanical Gardens open every day?

Accepted Answer

Peradeniya is open daily throughout the year, including public holidays. Opening hours are typically from early morning to late afternoon, and the gardens close to new visitors before dusk. It is advisable to confirm current hours through the Department of National Botanic Gardens or via Lakpura before your visit.

Question 7

What is the significance of Henarathgoda Botanical Garden?

Accepted Answer

Henarathgoda is where the first rubber plants introduced to Asia were propagated in 1876, using seeds brought from Brazil via Kew Gardens in London. This makes the garden a key site in the history of tropical agriculture, as rubber cultivation subsequently spread across Southeast Asia from this starting point. The original rubber trees planted in the nineteenth century are still standing and can be visited.
