Question 1

What is Amaranthus viridis used for in traditional medicine?

Accepted Answer

Amaranthus viridis is used in ayurvedic and folk medicine for a range of purposes including reducing inflammation, easing digestive complaints, managing fevers, and promoting wound healing. Traditional practitioners in Sri Lanka use various parts of the plant — leaves, roots, and seeds — in different preparations. It is considered a cooling herb within classical ayurvedic theory.

Question 2

Is Amaranthus viridis found in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Amaranthus viridis grows throughout Sri Lanka across multiple climatic zones, including the wet lowlands, dry zone, and intermediate regions. It is commonly found along roadsides, agricultural land, and disturbed soils. The plant is formally catalogued as part of Sri Lanka's ayurvedic medicinal plant heritage.

Question 3

Is Amaranthus viridis edible?

Accepted Answer

The young leaves of Amaranthus viridis are edible and consumed as a leafy vegetable in parts of South Asia, including Sri Lanka. They provide protein, iron, calcium, and vitamins A and C. The seeds are also nutritionally dense, though the plant is most commonly encountered as a medicinal herb in the Sri Lankan context.

Question 4

What family does Amaranthus viridis belong to?

Accepted Answer

Amaranthus viridis belongs to the family Amaranthaceae. It is an annual herb sometimes called slender amaranth or green amaranth. The genus Amaranthus includes both cultivated food species and wild plants that have been used medicinally across many cultures.

Question 5

Does Amaranthus viridis have anti-inflammatory properties?

Accepted Answer

Traditional medicine systems, including Sri Lankan ayurveda, have long used Amaranthus viridis preparations topically for skin inflammation and minor wounds. Preliminary laboratory studies have investigated anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity in the plant, though this research is at an early stage and not a substitute for medical advice.

Question 6

How is Amaranthus viridis prepared as a medicine?

Accepted Answer

Preparations vary depending on the intended use. Decoctions made from roots and leaves are used for internal applications such as fever management and digestive support. Crushed or pounded leaves are applied as poultices for skin conditions. Traditional practitioners tailor preparations to individual conditions according to ayurvedic principles.

Question 7

Where can I learn about Sri Lanka's medicinal plants as a visitor?

Accepted Answer
