Traumvilla Bentota is a small guest villa in the green countryside at Kommala, a few kilometres inland from the Bentota coast. With only a handful of rooms set around a garden and an outdoor pool, it suits travellers who would rather spend their days somewhere quiet among the trees and drive or cycle down to the beach and the river when they want them.
The villa stands at Gorakagaha Watta in Kommala, in the Bentota area on the south-west coast of Sri Lanka. It lies inland rather than on the sand: Aluthgama railway station is about 1.7 km away, Bentota railway station about 2.3 km, and Bentota town and its beach a short drive away. Lunuganga, Geoffrey Bawa's country estate, is about 4 km from the villa.
The drive from Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) runs around Colombo and down the coast towards Bentota, then turns inland for the last stretch to Kommala, and usually takes around 2 hours, depending on traffic. The easiest way to arrive after a long flight is a private airport transfer booked in advance with Lakpura: an English-speaking driver meets you in the arrivals hall and takes you straight to the villa in an air-conditioned car, van or coach sized for your group, from 2 up to 15 guests, at a fixed price for the whole vehicle rather than per seat. The same service works in reverse for your departure flight. Book the Colombo (CMB) Airport transfer to Traumvilla Bentota.
The rooms are air-conditioned, each with a private bathroom and a seating area, and some open onto a balcony or patio looking over the garden. With so few rooms, the villa keeps the feel of a private house rather than a hotel, and family rooms are available for those travelling with children.
The villa has its own restaurant serving international dishes for lunch and dinner, with tables outdoors in the garden, and meals can also be brought to your room. Most of the day here revolves around the outdoor pool, the lawn and the terrace. There is a small spa with a steam bath for massages and treatments, yoga can be arranged, and bicycles are available for exploring the lanes around Kommala. Parking on site is free.
Bentota is known for its long beach and for the Bentota River, where windsurfing, diving and other water sports, river safaris through the mangroves and fishing trips can all be arranged. Lunuganga, Bawa's garden estate on the lake, is close enough for an easy half-day visit. Further along the coast are the turtle hatcheries of Kosgoda, the mangrove islands of the Madu River and Galle Fort, an easy day trip to the south. Lakpura can arrange private transfers and day tours to all of these from the villa.
