Devi Canal Resorts & Spa is a small, quiet resort on Temple Road in Athuruwella, a village of the Induruwa area just south of Bentota on Sri Lanka's south-west coast. It sits beside a canal rather than on the sand, with an outdoor pool and garden at its centre and an Ayurveda centre that offers traditional treatments, massages and yoga.
The resort stands on Temple Road, Athuruwella, in Induruwa, beside the canal that gives it its name. Induruwa railway station is about 1 km away and Bentota station about 3 km, with the centre of Bentota around 4 km to the north. It is an inland, canal-side property rather than a beach hotel, so plan on a short tuk-tuk or car ride to reach the sea at Induruwa or Bentota.
Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) is about 115 km from the resort, and the drive usually takes around 2 hours on the airport and Southern expressways, depending on traffic around Colombo. The simplest way to arrive after a long flight is a private airport transfer booked in advance with Lakpura: an English-speaking driver meets you in the arrivals hall and takes you straight to the resort in an air-conditioned car, van or coach sized for your group, from 2 up to 15 guests, at a fixed price for the whole vehicle rather than per seat. The same service works in reverse for your departure flight. Book the Colombo (CMB) Airport transfer to Devi Canal Resorts & Spa.
The rooms are air-conditioned, with a private bathroom, television and free Wi-Fi, and some have a balcony. The resort's Ayurveda packages are based on its Superior rooms, with meals on a full-board basis.
The outdoor swimming pool, with sun loungers and the garden around it, is the heart of the property, and the on-site restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. The Ayurveda centre is run by a registered Ayurvedic doctor and offers consultations, Ayurveda treatment programmes, Shirodhara, massages and yoga sessions. There is also free parking, a 24-hour front desk and help with arranging tours.
Induruwa Beach and Bentota Beach are a short drive away, and the Bentota River offers boat rides through the mangroves as well as water-skiing, jet skiing and windsurfing. Brief Garden, created by Bevis Bawa, and Lunuganga, the country estate of his brother Geoffrey Bawa, are both within easy reach inland, and the turtle hatcheries of Kosgoda lie a little further south along the coast. Lakpura can arrange private transfers and day tours from the resort.
