Boutique 87 is a small, private villa in Bentota designed by Geoffrey Bawa, set in some 17 acres of gardens with its own lake, marshland and a pool. It has only two suites, so guests have the house, its art collection and the grounds almost to themselves. The land it stands on was once part of an 18th-century artisan residence from the Dutch or early British period.
The villa stands at No. 87 Galle Road in Bentota, on the south-west coast of Sri Lanka, set back from the main road behind its gardens. Bentota Beach is within about a 15-minute walk, Bentota railway station is roughly 1 km away, and Aluthgama station is about 2 km to the north.
Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) is about 110 km from the villa by road, and the drive usually takes 1.5 to 2 hours on the expressways, depending on traffic around Colombo. The easiest way to arrive after a long flight is a private airport transfer booked in advance with Lakpura: an English-speaking driver meets you in the arrivals hall and takes you straight to the villa in an air-conditioned car, van or coach sized for your group, from 2 up to 15 guests, at a fixed price for the whole vehicle rather than per seat. The two suites are listed as Deluxe Double Rooms of around 60 m², each with a king bed, air conditioning, an en-suite bathroom with a walk-in shower and its own separate entrance. The house is furnished with modern art and antiques, and the rooms open onto a patio and the garden.
Breakfast is included and is often served out in the garden, and meals are cooked to order from fresh local produce, with tables under the old trees as well as indoors. There is also a bar and lounge in the house for a drink in the evening.
Much of the pleasure is in the grounds themselves: stone paths under towering trees lead past the lake and the marshland, where water lilies drift and peacocks, kingfishers and purple-faced langurs are regular visitors. Beyond the gate, Bentota Beach and the water sports and mangrove boat trips of the Bentota River are close by, the turtle hatcheries of Kosgoda lie a short way south, and Galle Fort is an easy day trip.
