Something Is Better Than Nothing

من$3.00

Written in Sinhala by Anuhash Viduranga and published in Colombo by M. D. Gunasena & Co., this is a short book of reflective writing. The entire text is in Sinhala, so it will suit readers who read the language comfortably; there is no English translation within it.

The publisher introduces the book with the thought that we arrive in the world in a moment no one expected, and leave it in a moment just as unexpected. Between those two points, sorrow comes and so does happiness; victory comes and so does defeat; love comes and so does separation; ease comes and so do the long sighs that follow hard days. The argument the book sets out from is that nothing is ever wholly lost. Something always remains, and whatever remains gives something back — sometimes a weight on the heart, sometimes a lightness. In time, both the weight and the lightness pass into what is already behind us.

From there the emphasis falls on the present. The future has not arrived; what matters is this moment, and in this moment there is something in your hands. Having something, rather than nothing at all, is offered as reason enough to go on living. That idea gives the book its title.

Anyone who reads Sinhala and is drawn to short, meditative writing on grief, impermanence and getting through the day will find the register familiar. It is a slim volume, suited to being read in one sitting or returned to in pieces.
