A Sinhala-language work built around the Dhammapada, the collection of verses long regarded among Buddhists as a handbook of the teaching and a distillation of its essence. Rev. Wambatuwawe Sriniwasa Thero takes the verses in turn and sets out, at length, both the verses themselves and the nidāna stories — the occasions and circumstances in which each is said to have been spoken.
That pairing of verse and background narrative is what gives the book its shape. The Dhammapada's lines are short and often read as standalone aphorisms; the accompanying stories place them back in a setting, with the people and situations that prompted them. Expanding both together is the author's method throughout.
The publisher presents it as a working book for those who preach the Dhamma, and it is put together with that use in mind — a source to draw on when preparing a sermon around a particular verse. It is equally directed at readers studying the Dhammapada for themselves, or simply wanting the verses explained more fully than a bare translation allows.
Published by M. D. Gunasena & Co. of Colombo, an established Sinhala and English publishing house. Buyers outside Sri Lanka should note that the text is entirely in Sinhala, including the commentary and the narratives; the Pali verses appear within a Sinhala exposition. No English version of the text is included.
