A Sinhala edition of the classical devotional work composed by Vidyachakravarti, prepared by Ven Labugama Sri Lankananda Mahanayake Thero. The text is in Sinhala throughout, with no English translation, so it will suit readers who read the language or who are building a collection of classical Sinhala literature in the original.
Buthsarana sets out the power of taking refuge in the Buddha. What distinguishes this particular edition is that it was through Ven Labugama Sri Lankananda's work that Sinhala readers were first shown that Vidyachakravarti had composed Buthsarana as sixteen chapters. Those chapters are arranged as follows:
- Saranagamana phala — the fruits of going for refuge
- Arahaṁ
- Sammā Sambuddho
- Vijjācaraṇasampanno
- Sugato
- Lokavidū
- Anuttaro
- Purisadammasārathi
- Satthā
- Buddho
- Bhagavā
- The Buddha's manner of preaching
- Rūpakāya sampatti
- Dhammakāya sampatti
- The chapter of similes
- The Maha Vessantara Jataka
The sequence from Arahaṁ to Bhagavā follows the traditional epithets of the Buddha, each taken in turn, with the closing chapters moving to the Buddha's teaching, his physical and doctrinal attainments, a chapter of similes, and the Vessantara Jataka.
Published in Colombo by M. D. Gunasena & Co. (Pvt) Ltd, a Sinhala-language publishing house. It will be of interest to students of Sinhala literature, to readers of Buddhist devotional prose, and to anyone wanting Buthsarana in an edition prepared by a scholar monk.
