Bundala National Park sits on the southern coast of Sri Lanka, a stretch of saltwater lagoons, scrub and sand dune that has been drawing birdwatchers and naturalists for decades. This day safari takes you there directly from your hotel in Bentota, with a private vehicle, an English-speaking chauffeur guide and a three-hour jeep safari once you reach the park. It is a long day on the road and in the field, built around the chance to see one of the island's richest concentrations of wildlife in a single outing.
The park carries a weight of international recognition rarely found in one place: it was the first wetland in Sri Lanka to be declared a Ramsar site, it is designated a UNESCO biosphere reserve, and Birdlife International lists it as an Important Bird Area. Those designations exist because of what actually happens here. At the peak of migration Bundala shelters close to 200 species of birds, among them the greater flamingo, which arrives in large flocks to escape the northern winter. Painted storks, purple swamphens, darters and hornbills are among the park's regular residents, alongside cormorants, spoonbills, ducks and the Eurasian coot.
Bundala is also one of the few places in Sri Lanka where both the island's crocodile species, freshwater mugger and estuarine, can be seen in the same park, and its lagoons and scrub support elephants, deer, wild boar and a long list of smaller mammals and reptiles. Your jeep safari moves through this landscape with a guide who knows where to look and when to stop, whether that is for a hornbill in the canopy or a heron working the shallows of a lagoon.
The day itself runs to a set rhythm. Your chauffeur collects you from your hotel in Bentota in the morning and drives you down to Bundala, arriving in the early afternoon in time to meet the safari jeep for the three-hour drive through the park. Afterwards you return to your vehicle for the journey back to Bentota, arriving at your hotel in the evening, with the whole day coming in at around eight hours door to door. Comfortable, closed shoes are worth wearing, and photography stops along the route can be arranged wherever there is reasonable parking.
Park entrance tickets, food, drinks and gratuities are not included and should be budgeted separately, while hotel transfers, the chauffeur guide and the safari jeep are covered as part of the tour. This is a private excursion for your own party, suited to travellers aged five and over, and it makes most sense for anyone based in Bentota who wants a proper look at Sri Lanka's southern wetlands without having to organise the logistics themselves.
