A collection drawn from a series of newspaper articles by Nadeesh Dikkumbura, this book looks at Karl Marx the man, and at Marxism, from an angle other than the usual one. The title translates roughly as "Beloved Marx", and the affection in it is deliberate.
Dikkumbura's starting point is a complaint: that those who follow Marxism tend to learn it rather than understand it. What he sets out to do across these pieces is draw out the warmth and the pleasure he finds in Marx as a figure and in Marxism as he reads it — qualities he argues are missing from the version of Marxism commonly heard and seen in Sri Lanka today. The argument is made in the shorter, episodic form that newspaper writing imposes, with each piece standing on its own while contributing to the same case.
This book is written entirely in Sinhala. There is no English text, and no parallel translation. Readers without Sinhala will not be able to use it.
It will suit readers of Sinhala with an interest in political thought, in the history of the left in Sri Lanka, or in how Marx is talked about and taught locally. Anyone who followed the original newspaper column will find the pieces gathered here in one volume.
