Question 1

What family does Shorea stipularis belong to?

Accepted Answer

Shorea stipularis belongs to the family Dipterocarpaceae, a group of large tropical trees widespread across South and Southeast Asia. Members of this family are typically tall canopy trees characterised by winged fruits and commercially valuable timber or resin.

Question 2

What is Shorea stipularis used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

It is catalogued in Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic pharmacopoeia as a medicinal plant with traditional therapeutic applications. Dipterocarps in general are associated with astringent and antimicrobial properties derived from their resins, and are used in formulations addressing skin conditions and inflammatory ailments.

Question 3

Where in Sri Lanka does Shorea stipularis grow?

Accepted Answer

The species grows primarily in the wet lowland and submontane forests of Sri Lanka, particularly in the wet zone. It has been recorded in forest patches associated with areas like the Sinharaja region, which receives high annual rainfall year-round.

Question 4

Is Shorea stipularis endemic to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Shorea stipularis is not strictly endemic to Sri Lanka; it also occurs in parts of southern India. However, its Sri Lankan populations are considered locally significant, particularly as wet-zone forest habitats have reduced over the decades.

Question 5

How is Ayurvedic plant medicine documented in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka maintains an official Ayurvedic pharmacopoeia managed by government-affiliated botanical and medical institutions. Native medicinal plants are formally catalogued with their local names, plant parts used, and traditional applications, forming the regulatory basis for Ayurvedic practice in the country.

Question 6

Are dipterocarps commonly used in Sri Lankan traditional medicine?

Accepted Answer

Several dipterocarp species have documented uses in South Asian healing traditions, primarily through their resins and bark. In Sri Lanka, the Ayurvedic system draws on a wide range of native forest trees, and dipterocarps form a small but recognised part of that pharmacopoeia.

Question 7

Can tourists visit medicinal plant gardens in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Sri Lanka has several accessible botanical resources including the Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya, Ayurvedic resort herb gardens, and community medicinal plant plots. Guided nature tours through the wet zone can also include introductions to medicinal tree species in their natural forest context.
